ALL (E GRADE): Will be able to define the words ‘salvation’ and ‘redemption’   MOST (C GRADE): Will be able to explain how salvation and redemption can be achieved through Jesus   SOME (A GRADE): Will be able to explain how the crucifixion of Jesus is central to all Christian beliefs about salvation and redemption These terms are trickier than they first appear. Read through the two complete definitions below. How can we tell the two terms apart? Explain how the two terms are different in your books. Redemption – Is a collective term. It is the idea that sins can be forgiven through God and that people can be redeemed (forgiven for their sins). Jesus is often referred to by Christians as the Redeemer as he died for the sins of the whole world. God gave his only son so that all humans, be they believers or unbelievers, could be redeemed by Christ’s sacrifice. Salvation – Jesus came to earth to save people from their sins and this was achieved through his sacrifice in death on the cross. However, salvation is a personal term. Christians believe God has given us the gift of free will. The death of Christ on the cross opened the gates of heaven so that all people might be saved, but because of free will we can choose to reject Christ’s free gift of redemption. If you choose to accept Jesus and follow him, then you will gain salvation through him and go to heaven. Some Christians believe heaven was inaccessible before Jesus, or it was inaccessible if you had sinned in any way, or at the very least, very hard to get into; Jesus opened the gates! John 14:6 Jesus said “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” LO: To understand what is meant by Salvation and Redemption

4 LO: To understand what is meant by Salvation and Redemption
ALL (E GRADE): Will be able to define the words ‘salvation’ and ‘redemption’   MOST (C GRADE): Will be able to explain how salvation and redemption can be achieved through Jesus   SOME (A GRADE): Will be able to explain how the crucifixion of Jesus is central to all Christian beliefs about salvation and redemption Christians believe that God wants to have a good relationship with humanity, however, there have been times when humanity has made decisions that have gone against God’s will and that has jeopardised that relationship. God has then tried to reconcile that relationship (get it back on track) by sending messengers to save humanity from its sins (salvation). Cut out your ‘God’s plan of Salvation’ card sort and reorder the cards into ‘chronological’ order. Once you’ve got the order correct (on next slide), you will need a small drawing on each to help you remember it. LO: To understand what is meant by Salvation and Redemption

ALL (E GRADE): Will be able to define the words ‘salvation’ and ‘redemption’   MOST (C GRADE): Will be able to explain how salvation and redemption can be achieved through Jesus   SOME (A GRADE): Will be able to explain how the crucifixion of Jesus is central to all Christian beliefs about salvation and redemption Question E: ‘Heaven can be reached by everyone.’ Discuss this statement. You should include different, supported points of view and a personal viewpoint. You must refer to Christianity in your answer. USE SONIC! S… O… N… I… C… Hints! Christians believe Jesus has redeemed all of humanity but it is through Jesus that they can get to heaven through believing and following him (salvation). Romans 8:1-3a – Paul explains that Jesus was sent to save people: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.” Roman Catholic belief in purgatory – what does this say about everyone going to heaven? Do people go straight to heaven? What do Christians believe about heaven? Do they believe it is a physical place? Being close to God? That you can experience heaven on earth? What gets people into heaven? Can anyone go to heaven or do they need to meet certain criteria? Not all people believe in an afterlife – Stephen Hawking "I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.” E Grade – should focus on S and I. You must be able to give a Christian opinion and your own opinion. Your own opinion section should be at least half a page of what you personally think about ‘heaven can be reached by everyone’. If you don’t believe in heaven, say why, if you do believe in heaven, say why – say what your thoughts are on everyone being able to be forgiven and go to heaven. C Grade – should focus on S, O and I. You can do this by explaining Christian beliefs about heaven and getting there through salvation – so heaven can be reached by everyone, but not everyone will get to heaven! Second Christian opinion can be Roman Catholic beliefs about purgatory and that people who don’t know about Jesus can still go to heaven. Your personal opinion should be very detailed, see E Grade for ideas. A Grade – should focus on S, O and N. See C Grade for ideas. You must consider a non-Christian opinion, the hints box gives you a quote from Stephen Hawking but you should think about how you could approach this from a non-Christian point of view, not just a non-believer point of view.
