1 Starter for 5! What is the definition of original sin?
What does the serpent symbolise in the story of the Fall? What separates God from humans? Give two reasons why Jesus came to earth (incarnation). Which quote could be used to support fighting in a war?

2 Starter for 5! What is the definition of original sin? The idea that everyone is born with a built in urge to do bad things and disobey God. What does the serpent symbolise in the story of the Fall? Temptation What separates God from humans? Sin (behaviour which is against God’s laws) Give two reasons why Jesus came to earth (incarnation). To teach humans how God wants them to live, to be a sacrifice to take the blame for sin, to resurrect to show that sins can be forgiven, to bridge the gap between God and humans. Which quote could be used to support fighting in a war? ‘Beat the cutting blades of your ploughs into swords…’ OR ‘An eye for an eye…’

3 Salvation and Atonement
Learning Objective: To enquire into the concepts of salvation and atonement. I can define the terms salvation and atonement. I can understand the two ideas about how salvation can be achieved. I can explain the role of Jesus in salvation.

4 Explain what these images are showing…

5 Salvation Keyword: Salvation
Christians believe that sin separates humans from God. However, they can still be saved from sin because of the belief in salvation. Salvation means to be saved from sin and therefore being able to have eternal life with God in heaven. Keyword: Salvation To be saved from sin and being able to have eternal life with God in heaven. There are two main beliefs about how salvation can come about…

6 Salvation 1. Salvation through good works – the Old Testament makes it clear that a person achieves salvation by having faith in God and obeying God’s law. 2. Salvation through grace. Salvation is given by God through faith in Jesus. It is not earned or deserved but is a gift for the faithful.

7 Salvation by Grace: Salvation by Law:
Salvation is a gift to those who are faithful in God. It still means we need to try and follow God’s laws and teachings to our best ability but we can still be given salvation even if sometimes we make mistakes. Salvation by Law: Salvation by law is not possible on it’s own. People are always going to fall short of what God wants, no matter how hard they try. This diagram aims to illustrate to students that salvation by law alone is not possible, humans would never make it as we will always fall short and disobey God’s laws. Salvation by grace means that we have the gift of salvation – it is our intentions that matter. We need to try and obey God’s law and teaching and cherish the gift God has given us.

8 The Role of Jesus in Salvation
Christians believe that Jesus’ death makes up for the original sin committed by Adam and Eve so can bring humans back to God. Jesus died on the cross because he knew that his death was necessary to restore the relationship between God and humans and make salvation available for all. Jesus’ resurrection shows Christians that death and evil have both been defeated. Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, humans can receive forgiveness for sin, and are able to get close to God and will receive eternal life with God in heaven.

9 Atonement The fact that Jesus rose from the dead shows that God accepted Jesus’ sacrifice as atonement – this means Jesus restored the relationship between God and humans. Atonement removes the effects of sin and allows people to restore their relationship with God. This is only possible because of the sacrifice of Jesus. Jesus (life, crucifixion and resurrection) Salvation (grace) Atonement The Fall Original Sin Sin is separating humans from God.

10 Salvation and Atonement Recap
True or False: 1. Salvation means to be saved from sin and to have eternal life with God. 2. There are three ways we can achieve salvation. 3. Salvation through grace means that salvation is a gift. 4. Jesus doesn’t have an important role to play in salvation. 5. Jesus’ death means that there will be no more sin in the world. 6. Jesus’ death means sin can be forgiven which means humans can get back to God. 7. Atonement means the relationship between humans and God is still broken. There is a clip you can show here to recap if you think it would be helpful.

11 Get Creative! Before After Include: Sin (examples of sin)
You are going to creatively illustrate the concepts of salvation and atonement. You need to show how sin had been separating God from humans and how Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection has meant people can receive salvation and has allowed for the relationship between God and humans to be restored (atonement). You also need to include the idea of salvation through law. Before After E.g. get students to create two tunnels – one filled with sinful thoughts and actions and how this separates humans from God. They can then create another tunnel with these sinful thoughts and actions removed and how the relationship between God and humans is therefore open and restored. They need to annotate and explain their diagram and include the words salvation, atonement. You could take a picture of each piece of work and print it to stick in books. If you have time students can show each other their work – explain it to another group. Include: Sin (examples of sin) The Wedge of Sin Salvation through law and grace The Role of Jesus Atonement

12 What salvation means for Christians…
I believe the teachings in the book of Romans. Sin is described as something so serious that God sent his son Jesus to die for it. As a Christians I believe that instead of facing death for sin, Jesus took my sin upon the cross. Since I was a child I have accepted this gift of God’s love and put my faith in Jesus. Whether at home or at work, I choose to live a life of gratitude to God who has given me the greatest gift, salvation. What type of salvation is she referring to? Grace or law? ‘Salvation is God’s greatest gift to humans’ – evaluate this statement. What three questions would you ask her about her belief in Jesus and salvation?

13 Salvation and Atonement
Learning Objective: To enquire into the concepts of salvation and atonement. I can define the terms salvation and atonement. I can understand the two ideas about how salvation can be achieved. I can explain the role of Jesus in salvation.
