9th/10th Grade English Common Core Shifts Students will engage in rich evidence based conversations as well as be able to use evidence from sources to inform or make an argument in writing. Students will be reading more informational text (non fiction) vs. fiction. Students will constantly be building academic vocabulary that will help them with both the complex text, but comprehension in other subject areas.

9th Grade Honors Overview 1st Semester Health: 8 - 10 weeks - What does it mean to be healthy? How are you healthy? - Counter-argument Identity and Community* -Who are you? - What is a community? - How does your community shape your identity? Friends vs. Partners What is an effective relationship? *STEAM Project: propose a project that represents your identity as a SPHS STEAM student. 2nd Semester Resilience What is resilience? Growth vs. Fixed Mindset Love vs. Fate What is love? Is there a choice in who you love? Transformation Project What is something personal or communal you want to transform? document your process. Reflection -What have you learned about yourself this year?

Weighted Categories ELA tests/quizzes (15%) homework (10%) class work (30%) reading (20%) essay/projects (25%) Your child needs to be here every day in order to be successful in this class. If absent, it is the student’s responsibility to get the make up work and turn it in, one extra day given for each absence (full credit).

Grades 100-90 A 89-80 B 79-70 C 69-60 D 59-0 F Since this course is a graduation/A-G requirement, students must get a C or better to count for college credit.

Attendance SAN PEDRO HIGH SCHOOL ATTENDANCE POLICY A. A maximum of 7 full day absences/28 TOTAL class period absences are allowed during the current school year. B. At the 8th full day absence and/or 29th class period absence, FOR ANY REASON, the student’s name will appear on the Non-Participation STOP CLEARANCE LIST. Late work accepted for half points

Homework/Participation in STEAM Events Reading Log (ongoing)-read a book within a two week period. Use reading log to read on a nightly basis, reading portions of the book a night. Parent Signature required on the reading log. Sign this every two weeks. Accelerated Reader Quizzes (every 2 weeks) Vocabulary words/activities/quizzes weekly Some assignments not finished in class Mandatory Participation/Attendance in the STEAMposium on 12/6(evening) (ALL Work due for the STEAMposium Due:11/17)

Materials/Checking Grades Composition Book (keep in class) Pens, pencils, highlighters and paper (daily) Check Grades: Schoology.com (log in with student ID) *ALL Students must be able to log into their mymail account.

Parent Involvement Check Attendance –Daily(make sure all info is correct) Check Homework –Daily Check Grades-Weekly(Schoology) Check in with ALL teachers-Quarterly Attend Parent Conferences-2x/Year (9/28 and 2/22) Attend Back to School Night(TONIGHT!) and Open House(3/22) Volunteer your time on campus-2X/Year Attend STEAMposium (12/6) Attend a School Sponsored event
