Ancient Egypt Made By Lauren Thomas

Egypt Egypt is located on the African continent and is 834,343 square miles in size. The Ancient Egyptians lived along the banks of the river Nile in Egypt. Farmers first settled in Egypt along the River Nile around 5000 B.C. About 95 % of Egypt's population still live in the Nile valley (the area next to the river). Egypt is mainly made up of hot deserts and receives little rainfall. Without the River Nile, the area would be entirely desert.

Ancient Egypt The story of ancient Egypt has survived for thousands of years. Egypt was one of the greatest civilizations of the past. The monuments and tombs of their Pharaohs continue to stand intact today, some 4,000 years later! The kingdom in Upper Egypt was known as the white crown. The two kingdoms are called Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. The kingdom in Lower Egypt was called the red crown.

Pharaohs A Pharaoh is a ruler/leader of Egypt. A Pharaoh was the most important and powerful person in the kingdom. He was the head of the government and high priest of every temple. The people of Egypt considered the pharaoh to be a half-man, half-god. The Pharaoh owned all of Egypt.

Life after Death Egyptians thought that the dead people travel through the underworld and then come back alive. It was very important to ancient Egyptian religious beliefs that the human body was preserved. A method of artificial preservation, called mummification was developed by the ancient Egyptians. Mummification was a complicated and lengthy process which lasted up to 70 days.

Temples The ancient Egyptians believed that temples were the homes of the gods and goddesses. Every temple was dedicated to a god or goddess and he or she was worshipped there by the temple priests and the pharaoh. The large temple buildings were made of stone so that they would last forever. Their walls were covered with scenes that were carved onto the stone then brightly painted. These scenes showed the pharaoh fighting in battles and performing rituals with the gods and goddesses.

Discovering the past Why are Pyramids and temples important to archaeologists? What do you think? Temples and Pyramids are important to archaeologists because they can discover gods and goddess and they discover history of the Ancient Egyptians.
