1 Egyptian Gods and Goddesses Early Egyptians worshipped different gods and goddesses according to where they lived. Later, all Egyptians worshiped the same main gods, such as the chief god, Amon-Re. 1 of 3 Ancient Egypt and Nubia Section 3: Egyptian Religion Belief in an Afterlife Ancient Egyptians believed in life after death. During the Old Kingdom this afterlife was thought to be only for the upper classes. In the Middle Kingdom, all people felt they could attain it. To prepare for life after death, they believed that one’s body needed to be mummified, or preserved through a drying process.

2 The Pharaohs’ Tombs Pyramids, or tombs for the pharaohs, were begun when a pharaoh was crowned. Their construction could take 20 years and they were built on the west bank of the Nile.
