Parent University # 2 Grades K-5 Reading and Language Arts

Journeys Each week we focus on the following skills: Foundational Skills High frequency words Letter names and sounds Phonological awareness Fluency Comprehension skills and strategies Reading Literature and Informational Test Comprehension Skills and Strategies Language Vocabulary Strategies Grammar Writing

K-2 Online Resources Reading Eggs (This has practice for reading comprehension, phonics, and lots more) Vocabulary Spelling City (Students can practice their vocabulary and spelling words) Think Central (This contains all the textbooks used in class)

K-2 Assessments Kindergarten Weekly Skills test Unit Assessments Sight Word and Spelling Test (Starting in November) I-Ready-Diagnostic 1st and 2nd Grade Weekly Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Phonics assessments Spelling Test Primary Mid-Year and End of Year (promotional criteria)

Writing Writing skills will be incorporated into every reading block. Students will be practicing their penmanship, grammar, and different types of writing.

Content Based Standards We create our daily lessons by using the Florida Standards as our guide. Below is a brief layout of the LAFS (Language Arts Florida Standards) Reading Literature (retelling, story structure, cause & effect, drawing conclusions, inferences, vocabulary) Reading Informational (main idea, drawing conclusions, compare/contrast, vocabulary, text features) Writing (opinion and informative essays, grammar, conventions, punctuation, spelling)

Evidence Based Answers Students will be asked to ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring back to the text as the basis for their answers. Evidence Based Terms: The author said.. According to the text.. On page ____ it said… On paragraph ____ it said… Based on what I read…

ELA Typical Monday Introduction to Skills of the Week Day Spelling Words (spelling, meaning, and parts of speech) Vocabulary Words (meaning and parts of speech) Separate into 2 groups One group is working with teacher, second group is working on Waggle (online program) Switch then second group with teacher and first group is working on Waggle Reading Skills (Text Features and Graph Features) Read anchor text of the week (The Life and Times of an Ant) Review vocabulary words as they come up in the story Ask questions throughout the passage to increase comprehension of anchor text and reading skills Grammar Skill (Present Participles & Past Participles) Whole Group- Writing- discuss descriptive language to be used in writing

Phonemic Awareness and Phonics Explicit instruction Phonemic awareness taught through the use of oral language, songs, rhymes Based on principles of language and concepts of print Differentiated to meet students’ needs Integrated with spelling and writing Strategic and intensive intervention as needed

Fluency Incorporates instruction to target the following areas: Accuracy in word recognition Expression and intonation Natural phrasing Pausing and attending to punctuation Reading rate and stress Retelling

Vocabulary, Word Study, and Spelling Integrated throughout whole group and small group reading instruction Vocabulary incorporated with word study, phonics, and spelling Leveled readers to reinforce and review the vocabulary of the week and previously taught/discussed vocabulary

Comprehension Strategic Instruction: includes stop and think strategy, questioning, summarizing, inferring, identifying story elements, connections, predictions, collaborative grouping Open ended activities with multimodal opportunities to demonstrate understanding Leveled Readers to reinforce reading skills

Reading and Writing Program organization and components are same beginning in K and continues through 6th Spiraling curriculum throughout all grades Cohesive instruction in strategy and skills for whole group and small group instruction Integrates technology and digital resources Includes formal and informal assessment Aligned to Florida State Standards Every writing lesson focuses on both the form and traits of writing
