3 Language Arts Reading, Writing, Speaking, & Listening Our school adheres to a school-wide language arts program called Imagine It! This program includes phonics, spelling, reading, writing, and daily fluency practice. Social studies and science skills and concepts are integrated into the reading and writing activities.

4 A typical daily lesson will include the following components: Daily Oral Practice: This is a fluency passage the class will practice reading together. Phonics-Blending: Students blend words using spelling patterns we have studied. Students are able to transfer this knowledge when encountering a difficult word by breaking the word into syllables and sounding the word out. Dictation: Students practice correctly spelling words based on the spelling patterns we have studied. Fluency: Students read a decodable book each day to practice reading fluently. These books are short stories that focus on specific spelling patterns and high frequency words (sight words). Reading Selection: Students read and respond to a class selection. Vocabulary words are introduced for each story. Comprehension skills are emphasized as students read. These skills include: sequencing, clarifying, summarizing, asking questions, making inferences, and making connections. Writing: Students are given various response activities linked to the reading. The students are introduced to the 5 stages of writing: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, & publishing. Grammar rules are introduced during these lessons. Workshop Time: Students have independent activities, or students are in small groups for targeted instruction. Report Card Grades for Language Arts: Reading, Language, Writing

5 Writing in 2nd Grade

6 Writing 2nd grade students will be formally and informally assessed on their writing throughout the school year. During school-wide testing students will be given an on demand prompt and given up to 60 minutes to write a story based on the prompt. This year our students will be required to have: 4- Content specific writing samples each 9weeks (Reading, Math, Science, S.S.) 3- On demand samples (this is where the students are given a topic and asked to write) (1 - opinion sample, 1- informative sample, 1- narrative sample) 2nd grade students will be formally and informally assessed on writing throughout the school year. Many writing samples will be kept for a writing portfolio that will follow them to 3rd grade.
