Claes Oldenburg Pastry Case I 1961-62

But wait… what is Pop art??

Pop Art n.  A form of art that depicts objects or scenes from everyday life and employs techniques of commercial art and popular illustration. Artists Used Satire. Artists sometimes enlarged objects to gigantic proportions. These objects reflected mass culture and consumerism. Subjects are often easily recognizable and reflect popular items, people or ideas from American Culture: Food, Brand Names and products, Iconic Figures, Common, everyday household items, Current events Stylistically pop art can be defined as: Simple, crisp lines, oversized images or objects. Often reflects and copies the styles seen in the media, collages of popular images, bright colors. Some work re-creates the same subject in several pieces or within the same piece.

Jeff Koons (American, 1955) Michael Jackson and Bubbles, 1988 Porcelain 42 x 70 1/2 x 32 1/2 in. (106.7 x 179.1 x 82.6 cm) San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

STEP 1 - Research: Read pgs. 556-561 in Discovering Art History, then: Famous Pop artists: Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Keith Haring, Blek le Rat Presentation: Pick 3 artists from the above list and research them. Find 1 image of artwork by each artist research it (3 in all). Read about their work and find out what each piece means. Create a weebly site to present your research. You can do any format; just make sure there is at least 1 important work by each artist (3 works of art shown in total). Write 1 paragraph describing the artist and the artwork selected. Write a 2nd paragraph with your personal analysis/opinion of the artwork (support your opinion with observations and facts). You will be using this site to document your next two projects in place of written self-evaluations. You will be uploading process pictures for each project. STEP 2: Create: Create two sketches with color as options for your sculpture. Each sketch needs 3 source images for your Pop art design. Sculpture should be life-like and/or be inspired by Pop Art. You will need to print out color pictures of your sources!
