2. Pop art is an art movement that started in the mid 1950’s
Pop art is an art movement that started in the mid 1950’s. It’s subject matter was based on our new culture of mass everything. We now had mass production, mass consumption and mass media. The artists of the time took a satirical look at our new throw-away society.
Some of the leading artists were Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstien, Claus Oldenberg, Wayne Thiebaud and Jasper Johns. Most of these artists used pop images or symbols in their artwork.

3. There are many different styles in Pop Art
There are many different styles in Pop Art. This artist’s name is Claus Oldenburg. He works mostly with vinyl to make limp objects, such as Floor Cake or on an extreme scale like Spoonbridge and Cherry.

Jasper Johns used popular symbols to make his art. He wanted to make the viewer think about what art was. Is the flag art? Someone did have to design it. When we see it, we don’t see lines, shapes and color anymore because it is an icon. What do we see instead?

Wayne Thiebaud often painted pies, pastries, candy and ice cream. He liked to use bold colors and use thick layers of oil paint so the painting was more three-dimensional.

6. Andy Warhol is the most famous Pop artist
Andy Warhol is the most famous Pop artist. Among his most recognizable art are his Campbell soup cans, portraits of iconic figures like Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Elvis and Jackie Onassis Kennedy. Most of his artwork was printed by a technique called screen printing. He dubbed his studio “The Factory,” where he had many assistants doing much of the artwork for him.

7. Roy Lichtenstien is the artist that we will be focusing on in our project. He was enthralled with comic book imagery. Most of his artwork looks like it could be in a comic book. He also uses text to create a comic book feel. Sometimes the text comes in the form of dialogue and others it is a “wiz” or “bang” or a number of different onomatopoeia. He uses bold colors, heavy shading, and half-tones or Ben-Day dots as coloring techniques.

In this painting, you can see the Ben-Day dots very well. This is a type of printing process named after illustrator Benjamin Day. Ben-Day dots are colored dots that can be widely spaced, closely spaced or even overlapped to give different colors. They use cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The idea for Ben-Day dots comes from Pointillism.
Also, notice the block shading that Lichtenstien uses to create the comic book feel.

10. 8th GRADE ASSIGNMENT
We will be making Pop Art Portraits using Ben-Day dots to color. You need to use text in your artwork; either onomatopoeia or a bit of a conversation.

11. 5th GRADE ASSIGNMENT
You will be making your own comic book and using the techniques that Roy Lichtenstien used to color your artwork. Your characters need to be original creations. The book needs to have at least two pages.
