Traditional View of ECM: Content Management Manage all types of content (paper, images, HTML, rich media) and their associated lifecycle Document Management Secure authoring, indexing, versioning and presentation/publishing of technical and/or legal documents Imaging Consolidated storage and access of data-intensive static images and print stream data. Also includes forms capture and processing (OCR/ICR) Key Points: The traditional view of ECM is all about “The Content”. It includes: Web Content Management Content Management Document Management Imaging The problem is that managing content is just one dimension when addressing the real needs of business.

Conventional View of ECM Evolution of CM and ECM Conventional View of ECM Images Print Output EMAIL Audio Docs B.A.R. Web Content Technology that provides a means to… Create, capture Manage, secure Store, retain, destroy Publish, distribute Search, personalize Present, view, print …unstructured digital content Traditionally, Content Management is thought of as the ability to manage many different types of assets. As time progresses, the type and complexity of these assets that organizations must manage grows in an effort to better serve consumer demands. There’s structured, unstructured, complex and compound documents, streaming media, email – the list goes on. At the center of a Content Management solution is a Really Big Repository. This repository is designed to manage all of these various types of assets with content storage and retrieval at the top of list. Now, the market is evolving into a more encompassing solution known as Enterprise Content Management (ECM). The Meta Group has defined ECM as technology that provides a means to create, manage, store, publish and present unstructured content. So, ECM covers more than just content storage and retrieval. There is a lifecycle for content and the idea here to be able to address the complete content lifecycle for any asset type.

The Challenge… The simple management and delivery of content does not provide sufficient value to organizations Content and data must be shared across applications, business processes and organizational boundaries to increase responsiveness and knowledge Enterprises demand a platform that maximizes the value and performance of existing resources by automating underlying business processes and decision making Key Points: As you look to meet the challenges noted earlier, it is important to realize that just managing content is simply not enough. There is much more going on that needs to be considered and managaged Content and data need to be shared across these organizational and application boundaries to improve responsiveness For optimal business performance, enterprises demand the ability to automate decisions in how content is utilized and processes are carried out.

FileNet ECM Enterprise Content Management: Combining Content, Process, and Connectivity to drive Business Value Our ECM solutions allow customers to build and sustain a competitive advantage by managing enterprise content, automating and streamlining their business processes, and simplifying their critical and everyday decision making.

ECM Critical Success Factors Key Points: When looking at ECM…yes, it is important to make sure you can account for and manage all the types of content and associated applications we just discussed… ECM = Content, Process and Connectivity
