TVET Courses and School Based Apprenticeships/ Traineeships

What is the difference between VET & TVET Courses? The only difference between VET and TVET is : VET is offered at school VET: Vocational Education & Training TVET is offered at TAFE TVET: TAFE Vocational Education & Training

What can a VET/TVET Course offer? Vocational courses studied at a TAFE college or at school in Years 11 and 12 as part of your HSC Are available in a variety of industry areas Can give you a nationally recognised qualification Allow you to gain work related skills Work Placement component May provide advanced standing for TAFE or further education Count towards both your HSC and a TAFE qualification May contribute to your ATAR.

In order for a VET/TVET course to count towards a ATAR? Industry Curriculum Framework (240 Hours) can contribute to your ATAR. They are usually two-year courses that give units for the preliminary and HSC years of study

Framework Courses are available in the following areas: Automotive Accounting Business Services Construction Entertainment Hospitality Information Technology Metal & Engineering Primary Industries Retail Tourism

Non-Framework All other Non framework courses contribute to your HSC but won’t give you a ATAR Non-Framework Courses include: Board Endorsed, Content Endorsed or locally Designed Courses.

Non Framework Courses Animal Care/Animal Attending Aviation-Aircraft Operation Beauty Therapy-Make-up Business Services Children’s Services Community Services- Introduction Computer CAD Skills Electro technology Floristry Hairdressing Salon Skills Horse Industry Skills Marketing Media News Journalism Music Nursing in the Acute Care Environment Outdoor Recreation Painting & Decorating Plumbing Property Real Estate Radio Broadcasting Visual Arts & Contemporary Crafts (Photography or Sculpture)

At MFHS the following VET courses are offered: Hospitality Operations (240 hrs) Construction (240 hrs) Information Technology (240 hrs)

TVET College Campus’ Model Farms students Generally use: Granville Baulkham Hills Blacktown Nirimba (Quakers Hill) Richmond Mount Druitt Nepean Blue Mountains (school Holiday Block Release)

Student Considerations with TVET Courses Be realistic about travelling to a College Campus If your TVET course is on an afternoon where you have class, you need to catch up on the work Gain exposure to current Industry & what’s happening out in the workforce Work in an adult learning environment Work Placement in a field you may be considering for your career

APPLICATION/ ENROLMENT PROCESS Pick up a list of proposed courses for 2017 from the Careers Office Get a more detailed description of courses your interested in from the careers office OR visit http://wsi.tafensw.edu.au/tvet/courses.aspx 3. Pick up an application form from the Careers Office once you have decided which course you’d like to study 4. Drop it back to the Careers office by Friday 10th September (Week 8 Term 3)

School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships (SBA/ SBT) School based apprenticeships & traineeships provide students with the opportunity to attain an extra qualification, as well as their HSC Receive a Trade certificate at the end of your apprenticeship or A certificate 2 in your chosen traineeship The work experience, Industry Knowledge & training that you have had, will be a great asset to you Trainees & apprentices work a minimum of 100 days over Yr 11 & Yr 12 School Based Trainees work part time & undertake their formal (off the job) traineeship training as part of their HSC. Usually away from school half a day per week School based Apprentices will be on the job for approximately one day each week
