Reception Phonics Workshop Tuesday 4th October 2016

At Coopersale Theydon Garnon Primary School, we follow the Letters and Sounds programme. Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills which consists of six phases.

Terminology Phoneme: the smallest unit of sound in a word.   Grapheme: a letter or group of letters representing a word. Segmenting and blending: Segmenting consists of breaking words down into phonemes to spell. Blending consists of building words from phonemes to read. Digraph: This is when two letters come together to make a phoneme. Trigraph: This is when three letters come together to make a phoneme. Split digraph. A digraph in which the two letters are not adjacent – e.g. make. This is written as a_e.

Phase 2 Set 1: s, a, t, p Set 2: i, n, m, d Set 3: g, o, c, k Set 4: ck, e, u, r Set 5: h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss

Phase 3 Set 6: j, v, w, x Set 7: y, z, zz, qu ch, sh, th, ng ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er

Phase 4 This phase consolidates all the children have learnt in the previous phases. Children continue to learn ‘tricky words.’

What does a Phonics lesson look like? Revisit/review Quickfire to practice phonemes learnt so far. Teach Teach new phoneme, for example: - air Practice Buried treasure Air, zair, fair, hair, lair, pair, vair, sair, thair Apply Read captions: The goat has long hair. The cow got a pair of socks.

Daily Phonics teaching Children have a daily phonics lesson, lasting around twenty minutes. Children are exposed to a range of resources to support their understanding of letters and sounds. Games, songs, toys are pictures are all used to teach phonics.
