Presentation transcript:

GCSE English GCSE Literature 2017 onwards

GCSE English & GCSE Literature All students will be entered for both courses. The highest grade achieved will count double in Progress 8 score – this may be in Language or in Literature. Both courses will be taught simultaneously as the skills overlap. Spoken Language (previously called Speaking and Listening) will be assessed and graded separately as Pass/Merit/Distinction.

English Literature 2 Exams. 100% exam at the end of the course. Texts: Romeo and Juliet (begin teaching in Year 9 with theatre visit and study of text). An Inspector Calls. A Christmas Carol. Poetry (seen and unseen). Texts will be purchased through the school and available for students to buy.

English Language 2 Exams. 100% exam at the end of the course. Both papers are unseen and test reading skills (comprehension & analysis) and writing skills. Tests study on fiction and literary non-fiction (non-fiction with literary merit from last 200 years).

English Language and Literature New Focus Students can no longer just learn sections of the text that have been covered in class. They are expected to do further research on topics done in lessons. The new information needs to be added to what was covered in class so that a student can now present various views / ideas on a topic. This allows for the exploration of one or more ideas and interpretations.

READING It is imperative that children read. Non-negotiable to doing well in English.
