Brazilian Colonial History *Exploitation of certain goods – esp Cash Crops brazilwood, sugar cane, gold, silver, & diamonds = Brazilwood valuable as red dye = Natives were used to cut trees & harvest Cash Crops shipped back to Europe

Portugal’s Economy Grows through Brazil  *Production of agricultural goods that were exported to Europe - Tobacco, cotton, coffee ... *Sugar became by far most important product

Treaty of Tordesillas *Signed in 1494 between Portugal & Spain: = Tordesillas Meridian dividing New World = All land discovered East of Meridian was to be the property of Portugal = Everything to the West of it went to Spain
