SS6H6 Analyze the impact European exploration and colonization on various world regions.
1. Europe influenced the world. a) Spread of culture b) Spread of religion: Christianity c) Spread of European languages d) Spread of European governments 2. European nations became wealthy and powerful

Homeland We will use the term homeland to mean the European country that explored and conquered tropical lands. Portugal, Spain, Britain (England), and France were the major homelands we will learn about.

Colony, Colonies A colony is a place under the control of a homeland that is far away. The purpose of a colony is to make the homeland richer. Native People are often enslaved and always exploited. Every resource and raw material of the colony is directed to the homeland. Most colonies are created through violent conquest, such as war. This is a map of the original Thirteen Colonies. Can you identify some of the colonies?

Colonist, Colonial Europeans who go to live in the colonies are called colonists. A Native Person cannot be a colonist. Some colonists are born and raised in the colony, but they still think of themselves as European. The adjective colonial is used to describe something belonging to a colony or colonist. San Juan, Puerto Rico was a colonial city. Europeans who go to live in the colonies are called Colonist.

Triangular Trade Trade among three ports (Europe, Africa and the Americas). Simple trade is A to B and B to A. Triangular trade is: A to B; B to C; C to A. For example: Sugarcane was harvested by people who were slaves in Brazil. The sugar was sent by ship to Portugal. Portugal sent manufactured goods, such as guns, to West Africa to exchange for slaves. Slaves were sent by ship to Brazil to cut sugarcane. Portugal didn’t want slaves, so simple trade of sugar for slaves would not have met Portugal’s needs. Sugar for goods; goods for slaves; slaves to make sugar: that’s triangular three-way trade. Captains love triangle trade because their ship is always full.

Empire The homeland plus its colonies equals the homeland’s empire.
Portugal Spain France England

Imperialism Imperialism is the belief that it is good for a European homeland to have a big empire.

Nationalism The belief that our country is the best; all other countries are inferior.

Militarism A country’s military is its army and navy. Militarism is the belief that it is good to have a strong army and navy. Our military is what makes our country great. Our country has the best military. This makes our country great. Can you point out the various military branches?

Industrialization Farms are agriculture; factories are industry; when a country changes from an agricultural economy to an industrial economy—from farm to factory—the change is called industrialization.

Scramble for Africa From 1880 to 1910, European countries rushed to colonize the continent of Africa. Colonies in North and South America fought wars to separate themselves from the control of the homelands. All colonies in South America were free of European control by around So European powers turned their attention to Africa. They scrambled to conquer and colonize the continent. The main empire-building, imperialist countries in Africa were Great Britain (England, UK) and France. But Portugal, Spain, Denmark, and Germany continued the race to conquer part of Africa. Later Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands joined in. These countries believed their power and glory would increase if they controlled more of Africa. The Scramble for Africa was a competition among European powers.

Exit Ticket European countries such as Portugal, Spain, France and England built wealthy and power empires during the colonial period. Explain steps that where taken to make this happen.
