syllables Words are made of syllables (음절). sad… sad = 1 syllable happy… hap-py = 2 syllables beautiful… beau-ti-ful = 3 syllables

Vowels (모음) A E I O U

Rule #1. one syllable ending in ‘e’ add “~r” nice… nicer cute… cuter close… closer

Rule #2. one syllable ending in one vowel and one consonant (add extra consonant) add “~(consonant)er” big… bigger hot… hotter fat… fatter

Rule #3. one syllable ending in more than one consonant/ vowel add “~er” fast… faster short… shorter young… younger

Rule #4: words that end in “y” change “y” to “i” and add “~er” pretty… prettier funny… funnier happy… happier angry… angrier

Rule #5: three or more syllables add “more” beautiful… more beautiful expensive… more expensive *boring… more boring (*only two syllables)
