Comparatives and Superlatives! Oh my! Bigger, better, fastest, MORE!

First! Adjectives! What are they? BRAINSTORM! Syllable! What is it? One or more letters that make up a unit of spoken language. A syllable is made up of either a single vowel sound (as in “oh”) or a combination of vowel and consonant (as in “no” and “not”)

When do you use the comparative or superlative form? When you want to compare different objects. Who is taller? Which is Bigger? Which do you like best?

How comparatives work. Use the comparative form when comparing two different objects. Example: Girls Generation is more popular than Brown Eyed Girls!

How to construct (make) the comparative form Add ‘er’ to the end of one syllable adjectives. fast + er = faster Example: cheap cheaper / hot hotter / high higher For two syllable adjectives that end with a ‘y’, change the ‘y’ to an ‘i’ and then add ‘er’. Example: happy happier / funny funnier

Two, Three or more syllable adjectives… Place ‘more’ in front of the adjective. Example: interesting more interesting / difficult more difficult AND when using the comparative form (comparing and contrasting two objects) use ‘than’.

EXAMPLES! One syllable adjective: MP3 players are cheap er than ipods. Two syllable adjective ending in ‘y’: Bart Simpson is funn ier than sponge bob square pants. Two, three or more syllables: Science is more difficult than English.

TWO important exceptions 1.good - adjective better - comparative 2.bad - adjective worse - comparative

Fly Swatter Game! Two people will come to the board. I will say an adjective, the person to swat the comparative form wins. Best out of 5, wins a point for their team. Anyone can challenge the winner to the next round.

Review comparatives White Board Game!

Smart On the white board, you must write a comparative sentence using the adjective on each slide. You can help each other but you must rotate the white board. For example, if I showed this slide, you would write: Harry Potter is smarter than Ron Weasley OR Ron Weasley is smarter than Harry Potter. Ron Weasley Harry Potter

talented MadonnaLady Ga Ga

Good Pizza Kimchi

Which animal do you prefer? cute

Which enemy do you prefer? The JokerThe Scarecrow scary

Which snake is longer? long Royal Python Anaconda

Now…

Use the superlative form when speaking about three or more objects to show which object is ‘the most’ of something. Example: Seoul is the most exciting city in Korea.

How to construct (make) the superlative form For one syllable adjectives, place ‘the’ before the adjective and add ‘est’ to end of the adjective. Example: cheap the cheapest / hot the hottest / high the highest

Two Syllable Adjectives Ending in ‘y’ place ‘ the ’ before the adjective and remove the ‘y’ from the adjective and add ‘iest’. Example: happy the happiest / funny the funniest

Two, Three or More Syllable Adjectives place ‘the most’ before the adjective Example: interesting the most interesting / difficult the most difficult

EXAMPLES! One syllable adjective: Royal Pythons are the longest animals. Two syllable adjective ending in ‘y’: The koala is the laziest animal. Two, three or more syllables: However, I think Border Collies are the most interesting animals because they are the smartest.
