Architecture and Inside the Great Pyramids of Egypt 7 Bellamy 2016

Step Pyramids First type of pyramid made Made of mud bricks Looked like giant steps and were therefore called Step Pyramids This is the first generation of pyramid building (remind you of another structure? WHY?)

Pylons were large walls, decorated with carvings that stood at the entrance of temples and sometimes pyramids

First pylon of the Ramses III temple

Obelisks 1. Obelisks were tall stone columns 2. They were used as message boards 3. Engraved with names of rulers + hieroglyphs

This obelisk stands in front of the Luxor Temple which was built parallel to the riverbank and close to the Nile. King Amenhotep III built it for Amon-Re - king of the gods.

Sphinx 1. The general role of sphinxes was as temple guardians. 2. Were built in front of structures such as royal tombs or religious temples.

This sphinx was built facing the sun in front of the great pyramid of Giza.

Pyramid Construction 1. Pyramids were built by thousands of Egyptians, not just slaves. 2.They were built out of giant blocks of limestone or granite which sometimes weighed as much as a car! 3.Pyramids were made without mortar, supposedly the blocks fit together perfectly.

Great Pyramid of Giza

Think about it: WHY were pyramids built on the west bank of the Nile River, facing the east?

Inside the Pyramid: Most important was the burial chamber- the reason it was built! An air shaft was made to allow the soul to be released Multiple storage chambers were needed- the more stuff, the more storage needed! Secret chambers and trick passage ways were used later to trick would-be grave robbers!

Personal Pyramid Preparation Cut your pyramid so that it is a balanced shape that pleases your Mini-Pharaoh: Hold the folder so that the fold is at the bottom and it opens at the top. Find the center at the top and draw a straight line from the bottom corner on each side to the top point. Cut the line so that the folder has become two triangles with a fold at the bottom connecting the two. Write “Pharaoh (Your Name)” on front

Example: CUT HERE Pharaoh Granfield Fold is at the bottom

Inside the Pyramid: ONLY DESIGN on the TOP triangle- NOT BOTH! You need the other to pack! Place your burial chamber first. Then designate the storage chambers and any secret chambers or trick passages. Locate air shafts (escape holes for souls) Once your pyramid has been constructed, it is time to pack it for the afterlife!
