8 Temples What were the significance of Egypt’s great temples?
Homes of the gods People visited temples to worship, offer the gods gifts and ask for favors Features: Rows of stone sphinxes: (imaginary creatures with bodies of lions and heads of animals/humans) - took up to 20 years to build. Ramses the Great lived during the late 1300’s and early 1200’s BC and reigned as Egypt’s pharaoh for 67 years. Ramses the Great built these massive temples in Karnak, Luxor and Abu Simbel. It is believed that Ramses the Great built these temples to leave a mark as a reminder of his great strength and wealth.

Temples were an important element of Egyptian economy because they employed large workforces and earned income from agricultural land and gold mines. Temples were surrounded by ancillary buildings such as granaries and slaughter-houses, in which daily offerings were stored and processed.)

Hieroglyphs were written on: PAPYRUS Long lasting paper like material made from reeds kept complicated on purpose so that not many people could master it and scribes could keep their special position.

14 Accomplishment #3: Egyptian Artwork
Art was reflected on the walls of temples and tombs. Art pieces reflected important historical events, religious rituals, and daily life in ancient Egypt. Art work came in the form of paintings, carvings, jewelry, burial masks and statues. Since most of Egyptian life revolved around their religious belief in the afterlife it is understandable that most of the artwork would be found in the temples.
