1 Ancient Egypt Eras of Art 3000 BC – 30 AD

2 The Old Kingdom: 2575 BC to 2150 BC
It was during this time that pyramids were first made in Egypt. Pharaohs were both head of the government and also considered gods. This belief was part of why people built pyramids to house their deceased pharaohs in. During this time the Great Pyramid at Giza was built as well as the Great Sphinx.

3 The Great Pyramid at Giza
Largest pyramid ever constructed. Was constructed as the tomb for Pharaoh Khufu. Is one of the Seven Wonders. 481 ft tall when built. 455 ft tall now.

4 Great Sphinx Built to guard important areas (Giza Complex).
Is the largest and oldest structure in the world. 241 ft long (one eye alone is 6ft tall!). Used to be painted.

5 New Kingdom: 1520 BC – 1075 BC During this time many temples were built by the pharaohs for the gods. Common elements in these temples were sequential art pieces (panels that told stories similar to how comics do), relief sculptures ( where you etch out an image from rock), and hieroglyphs (pictures that stood for words). Most of the artwork from this time depicted the gods, the myths behind the gods, and the pharaoh’s legacy. The Temple of Luxor was built during this time, and the Temple of Karnak was renovated. The Valley of Kings, which housed King Tut’s tomb was built during this time.
