Welcome to the HB Huddle June 17, 2017

What is the HB Huddle? We’re an offspring of the Women’s March Started with our first meeting in February Nearly 100 people showed at the HB library Created five teams, each with at least one facilitator, as follows . . .

HB Huddle / Environment Team Facilitator: Karen Coyne “Earth day, every day”

Accomplishments in the last month Participated in Surfrider’s beach cleanup, followed by… A meeting on the beach with 2 speakers: Antonia Castro-Graham to discuss CCA’s/CCE’s Ray Hiemstra to discuss the Poseidon Desalination Project

Accomplishments, cont. Established four committees, each with a chairperson and assistant chairperson: 1. Energy Committee Chairperson: Steve Shepherd Assistant Chairperson: Kirk Nason 2. Water Committee (Acting) Chairperson: Stephanie Pacheco (Acting) Assistant Chairperson: Pam Kamps 3. Toxin-Free HB Chairperson: Pam Kamps (Acting) Chairperson: Anna Ferree 4. Trash-Free HB Waters: TBA

Committee Descriptions/Updates 1. Energy Committee: Focusing specifically at this time on CCE’s (Community Choice Energy), which would allow people to choose cleaner energy rather than strictly support SCE’s monopoly. Some of us attended the last city council meeting and experienced some resistance from the council, so we have our work cut out for us. Some of us attended an advocacy training on CCE’s and made connections that will helps us here in HB

Committee Descriptions/Updates, cont. 2. Water Committee: Focusing specifically at this time on combating Poseidon’s desalination plant next to our coastline Working hand-in-hand with R4RD and CoastKeeper 3. Toxin-Free HB Committee: Will work hand in hand with HB Tomorrow to see that we have a fully executed Toxic-Free HB plan in place before year end 4. Trash-Free HB Water Committee: Keeping trash out of our drains and oceans.

Create a Women’s Rights T-shirt We are looking for t-shirt designs to raise funds for our group to support Planned Parenthood and other women’s rights efforts in the community. Please share some of your ideas with us!!! Include your favorite phrase for women’s rights and/or drawings.

Phrase ideas 1. Wanted: a womb of my own. 2. Dignity, respect, and justice for all. 3. I’m a feminist. What’s your superpower? 4. Men of quality do not fear equality., 5. Respect Our Existence or Expect Our Resistance. 6. Silence is not an option. 7. The rights of the minority should never be subject to the whim of the majority".

Agenda for Today’s Breakout Session Discuss ideas for t-shirt designs. Discuss actions from prior meetings. Discuss google document used as an informational forum for the group. Look at Planned Parenthood Toolkit. Plan pin making for next meeting. Questions and/or comments. Next meeting is Sunday, July 9th at 2:00pm.
