Servant Leadership ASQ Portland Section 0607 By Ed Landauer, C.Q.E., P.E. May 9, 2017

Agenda Servant-Leader Concept Servant-Leader Characteristics Servant-Leader Examples A Path Forward

Servant-Leader Concept Servant-Leader is servant first Starts with the feeling that one wants to serve first Then makes a conscious effort to lead Difference shows in the care taken by a servant Makes sure other people’s highest priority needs are being met The check: Do those served grow as persons? Do they become healthier, wiser, freer? Are they more likely to become servants?

Stages of Leadership Position Focus “I want to be the best” First Job “I will help the team be the best” “We can be the best” “This group can be the best” “I will run interference to make the organization the best” “You can be the best- I will help you achieve it” First Job Second Job Team Leader Department/Division Manager Operations Manager General Manager

Authentic Leaders Are chosen by followers Their ability to lead depends on the Leader’s skill for: Withdrawal and action Listening and persuasion Practical goal setting and intuitive prescience

Marvelous and Frustrating Things about Servant-Leaders It is not a tidy “how-to” checklist It is a philosophy that embraces certain principles- but few prescriptions It is not a destination- it is a path

Critical Characteristics of a Servant-Leader Listening Empathy Healing Stewardship Awareness Persuasion Conceptualization Foresight Commitment to the growth of people Building community

Transforming Ourselves to become Servant-Leaders Recognize that we are equal to those we are leading Become someone people look up to Be willing to get our hands dirty Be willing to sacrifice our own selfish desires for the benefit of the group Take the initiative to ensure each person is needed and wanted

Examples/Experiences- both Positive and Negative George Steve Leroy John

A Path Forward-As a Manager who feels an obligation for the future, here are some things I can do: Give my best attention to the young people entering the business Give people responsibility and help them assume responsibility for their own growth Give research opportunities to those who show promise Give a person challenge and opportunity in his or her work Give the opportunity for advancement to those who give indications of basic growth
