PERIODIZATION PURPOSE: To understand periodization and analyze the era 1800-1840 using periodization Era of Good Feelings 1815-1825 The Federalist Party was dead after the War of 1812 leaving only ONE PARTY, the Democratic Republicans from 1814-1828 (Era of Good Feelings) President Monroe tried to build a political system where national unity was the theme of the era How does the Compromise of 1820 fit into that era?

Slavery and the compromise of 1820

Periodization Prompt: Analyze and explain the political ideas that defined the United States in 1825-1840. To what extent did democracy grow during this era? For the events during the era 1825-1840, write down the following evidence and decide what defined this era. What were the key themes? What would you maybe call this?

Change in voting qualifications in most states

VOTER TURNOUT Percentage of Voter Turnout (eligible voters, white males mostly)

Supreme Court Decisions Marbury v. Madison (1803) – doctrine of judicial review is established Dartmouth College v. Woodward (1819) – upheld the validity of contracts (with reference to an attempt to change the charter of Dartmouth College) Commonwealth v. Hunt (1842) – labor unions are not illegal conspiracies, provided their methods are “honorable and peaceful”

Return to a two-party system 1828 Democrats start to break up, by 1830’s the Whig Party has risen which replaces the Federalist party again. Whig Party formed mostly over Andrew Jackson and his abuse of power, party leader was Henry Clay Democrats and Whigs are forced to campaign for office, parades, speeches and rallies become important.

Andrew Jackson-President for the Common Man?

Indian Removal Georgia wanted to removed Indians from their land (gold) as they were not seen as citizens of their state 1830  Indian Removal Act Cherokee Nation v. GA (1831) * “domestic dependent nation” Worcester v. GA (1832) Jackson: John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it!

Indian Removal-Trail of Tears

Nullification Crisis 1828 Congress with the help of Jackson tries to pass a tariff that would help protect merchants from the Northeast but would hurt small farmers in the the South and West. 1830 South Carolina tries to nullify the law saying its unconstitutional because it favors the Northeast, led by VP John Calhoun 1830 Jackson supports state’s rights, but the state’s cannot break from a federal law.

"John Calhoun, if you secede from my nation, I will secede your head from the rest of your body."

Periodization In your group, decide what characteristics define the era from 1825 to 1840. What could this era be called? Why?

How does the Nullification Crisis fit with the following events? Articles of Confederation (1777) Bill of Rights (1790) Virginia & Kentucky Resolves (1799) Nullification Crisis (1833)
