1824: 4-way election, no one gets majority in electoral college – House of Reps decides winner Speaker of House Henry Clay pushed for John Quincy Adams When Adams wins, he makes Clay Secy of State Furious Andrew Jackson (who had most total votes), breaks away and forms Democratic Party

3 Andrew Jackson becomes President
1828: Jackson wins vs. Pres. JQ Adams, appeals to “common man” & gives govt jobs to supporters (spoils system) 1830: Jackson wants to force Native Americans out of east coast & south – gets Congress to pass Indian Removal Act Cherokee fight in court – Supreme Court rules Jackson doesn’t have right to remove Indians Jackson ignores the ruling Sends Indians on “Trail of Tears” “(Sup. Court Justice) John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it!”
