Information for Future IB Students and Parents November 28, 2016

What is IB? The International Baccalaureate is an international educational organization. The Diploma Programme is designed for high school students (Grades 11 and 12). The IB aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people. The goal is to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. The programme encourages students to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners.

Who should take IB? Any student who wants to challenge themselves! A student who enjoys learning that goes ‘beyond’ the classroom. A student who can handle a busy schedule. A student who plans to attend university. A student interested in post-secondary schools overseas. Most important: able to handle stress and a busy schedule!

What do students study in IB? Three subjects at higher level Three subjects at standard level The Core (TOK, CAS, EE) These are studied at the same time as your courses for an Alberta high school diploma.

Subjects offered at LBP (Grades 11-12): Standard Level Higher Level Mathematics English A1 Biology History Physics Chemistry French B Visual Arts TOK Physics/Biology & French B are tested in Grade 11

What does a Grade 10 student’s schedule look like? Math 10-C Science 10 ELA 10-1 Social Studies 10-1 French 10 and 20 CALM 20 and Phys Ed 10 Biology 25 and Physics 25

What are my Options for Grades 11 and 12 IB? At the end of Grade 10, students will be asked to re-evaluate their choice to be in IB, and to re-apply to the program. Students may: choose to take two to five IB courses to earn Certificates take six IB courses to complete the Diploma choose not to continue in IB

The Core: Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the EE (Extended Essay) and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) TOK helps students critically think and inquire about “How do we know what we know?” The EE is an in-depth study of a topic chosen by the student. CAS is the extra-curricular component of IB that helps students stay healthy, explore their interests, and connect with their community

IB Assessment Each IB course has a unique set of classroom assessments, which are evaluated by teachers. The IB exams are scheduled for the first three weeks of May (Grades 11 and 12). IB marks awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest).

So what are the benefits of IB? Knowing more about yourself as a learner Time management Handling a stressful schedule University preparedness University credits

Parent Choice/Student Choice The choice to take part in an IB programme must come from the student. The workload and pace are significantly greater than in a regular high school program, and the student needs to understand the implications of their choice. Sometimes the situation changes and students and parents change their minds. Nonetheless, if a student enters the IB Programme at LBP, we make a commitment to help the student complete the programme. We are looking for students who will start and finish the IB programme at LBP.

LBP & IB Fees (2016-17) Registration Fee: $250.00 Subject Fees: $200/course (Grade 11 and 12) Grade 10 students pay $250 (deposit) Grade 11 students usually pay $450-650 Grade 12 students usually pay $450-800

Application/Registration Application process Expression of Interest on the CBE website http://www.cbe.ab.ca/FormsManuals/International- Baccalaureate-Registration-Information-and- Expression-of-Interest.pdf Application Deadline: Application package and all accompanying documents must be delivered to your designated IB school by January 15, 2017 All students that apply to the Programme are accepted into Grade 10 IB

What is the CP? The International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (CP) is a complimentary programme that is specifically developed for students who wish to engage in career-related learning.

Why offer the CP? The programme promotes development of skills, and encourages students to take responsibility for their own actions. A key feature of the CP is that it provides flexibility to allow for local differences. Each school creates its own distinctive version of the CP to meet the needs, backgrounds and interests of its students.

CP Components Four interrelated components form the core: Personal and professional skills Service learning Reflective Project Language Development Students will study: 2 or more DP courses from IB Career-related courses: an opportunity for students to learn theories, concepts, application and skills in authentic and meaningful contexts

Possible CP Streams Engineering Biological/Medical Sciences Math IB SL Physics IB SL Biology IB SL Robotics (LBP) Chemistry IB HL Design Studies (LBP) Sports Medicine (LBP) Architecture Psychology (LBP) Culinary Computer Programming (LBP) Visual Art IB SL Foods (LBP) Man. and Mark. (LBP)
