Standards Sue Sullivan from NJDOE led the effort to add Computational Thinking : Computer Programming to the Technology Standards 8.2.E Standards released in October 2014 Very basic, but a good started. New Jersey is one of only seven (?) states with computer science standards. (Code.org/CSTA)

Computational Thinking and Programming Technology 8.2.E Computational Thinking and Programming Adopted October 1, 2014

A2597 / S2161 Beginning with the 2016-2017 grade nine class, the State Board of Education shall require that the local graduation requirements adopted by a board of education permit an Advanced Placement computer science course to satisfy a part of the total credit requirement in mathematics. For an Advanced Placement computer science course to satisfy a part of the mathematics credit requirement, the student must be concurrently enrolled in or have successfully completed algebra I and geometry or the content equivalent. Signed by the Governor on January 19, 2016

New Jersey was the 26th state to make CS count as a math or science Code.org

A3440 / S2030 The Department of Education shall undertake a review of the Core Curriculum Content Standards to ensure that they incorporate modern computer science standards where appropriate. The department shall report any findings and recommendations to the Governor by December 31, 2015. Signed by the Governor on January 19, 2016

A2766 Creates a computer science teaching endorsement. Introduced by Assemblyman Diegnan Referred to the Assembly Education Committee. CSNJ worked with Rutgers, Kean, TCNJ, Rowan, Richard Stockton and Ramapo to create a proposal for a CS endorsement. Summary In addition to a certification in another area Recommendation, not requirement at first Grandfather clause for those currently teaching CS. Four courses equivalent to : CS Principles, APCS A, Data Structures and CS Methods Note: One of the main issues is the lack of trained CS teachers in K-12

A2873 Requires computer science as part of a graduation requirement. Introduced by Assemblywoman Jones CSNJ does not support the bill in its current wording. CSNJ’s suggestion is to create into two bills: All high schools in New Jersey must offer a computer science course by 2018/19. All students should have the opportunity to take CS Computer science graduation requirement by 2022/23 Introduction to Computer Science Principle – ½ year class

Statistics New Jersey currently has 24,988 open computing jobs (4.5 times the average demand rate in New Jersey). The average salary for a computing occupation in NJ is $97,862, which is significantly higher than the average salary in the state ($53,920). New Jersey had only 891 computer science graduates in 2014; only 15% were female. Code.org
