The number of APCS test takers is growing at nearly 6 times faster than the number of schools offering APCS. This means that those with the opportunities are taking advantage of those opportunities, but most students in the state don’t have the opportunity.

Signed by the Governor Christie on January 19, 2016 Working with NJDOE to adopt revised standards based on CSTA standards and K-12 Framework. Process is currently put on hold during transition

22 A2873/ S2487 Requires all high schools in NJ to offer computer science class by 2018/19 Signed by Governor Christie in January 2018 New Jersey is one of 11 states to require all high schools to offer Computer Science.

23 A2193 / S1816 Creates a computer science teaching endorsement.
Key legislators: Sen Diegnan, Sen Ruiz, Asm Singleton, Asw Egan Jones CSNJ worked with Rutgers, Kean, TCNJ, Rowan, Richard Stockton and Ramapo to create a proposal for a CS endorsement in 2014. Changes had to be made to satisfy other organizations.

25 A2193 / S1816 27 states have some sort of Computer Science Teacher Licensing, Certification or Endorsement Educational Testing Service (ETS) is currently working on a Computer Science Praxis exam that should be released in September 2018.

Proposed “Computer Science for All” initiative during his campaign Included $2 million in his budget proposal for CS Education Discussed the need for a State CS Action Plan Encouraging him to join GovernorsForCS

27 What to do now? Pass bill for CS Teaching Endorsement
Create a NJ State CS Action plan Fund professional development Revise CS standards Communicate and work together to create a common vision of CS4NJ

28 What can Colleges and Universities Do?
Develop Teacher Preparation Programs for pre-service and in-service teachers Establish collaboration between Schools of Education and Schools of Computer Science Collaborate with other NJ Universities and Colleges in support of K-12 CS Education Offer Professional Development workshops
