1 Ayala RAD Program Robotics ∙ Aerospace ∙ Design

2 What is the Academy of Computer and Engineering Sciences?
Project-based Learning Links to careers Partnerships with industry Career experience 21st Century skills

3 Program Features: UC approved courses
Cohort honors / AP classes with close teacher support Interdisciplinary projects using modern skills College credit upon passage of an EoC or AP Exam AP/PLTW recognition Mentorship and internship opportunities

4 Courses: Introduction to Design (IED, Year 1): Students learn engineering design process, 3D drafting, modeling, sketching, and 3D printing. Counts as a UC art class and can receive college credits with an EoC score of 6 or better. Principles of Engineering (POE Year 2): Students learn statics, build structures, build mechanisms, use tools, design circuits, design control systems, and design and build robots. Can receive college credits with an EoC score of 6 or better.

5

6 Aerospace Engineering (AE, Year 3): Students learn the fundamentals of atmospheric and space flight. Students design an airfoil, propulsion system, and rockets, learn basic orbital mechanics, and build remotely-operated vehicles. Can receive college credit with an EoC score of 6 or better. Coming in fall of 2018. AP Capstone (Seminar & Research, Year 3/4): Students complete a capstone project working with applications, robotics, or engineering. Can receive college credits and a special AP Capstone Diploma. Students make take 1 or 2 years of the course.

7 Special Academy Honors:
AP Capstone Certificate – Take AP Seminar in Grade 11; score a 3 on the AP exam Take AP Research in Grade 12; score a 3 on the AP exam

11 Q: Can my student do sports / band and be in RAD
Q: Can my student do sports / band and be in RAD? Yes, but keep in mind that ACES has a demanding schedule so, like with all things, they will have to keep balanced.  That being said – the best schools want smart AND athletic leaders. Q: Can my student take AP classes? Yes! Students may opt to take AP classes in place of the integrated RAD course where there is an equivalent. AP classes are encouraged but optional. There are numerous special academic awards for those who take AP classes in addition to RAD core classes Q: Can my student also do 4 years of language? Yes, the schedule is designed with this in mind. Keep in mind that students may take summer courses to fit more classes but this is not required.

12 Q: My student does not meet Math requirements what do I do
Q: My student does not meet Math requirements what do I do? Engineering requires strong math skills, but for students with a passion for engineering there are ways to catch up. See your counselor for help. Q: How do I sign up? Ask your counselor when you register. You can also contact Mr. Ryan Bell or Academy Chairs Esibon Syiem and Vivian Yeh.
