Student Health Insurance, Health Services and the International Student 2016 – 2017

What is covered by Student Health Insurance? Most things at Health Services covered 100% Doctor and hospital visits for illness & injuries Immunizations covered 100% Preventive & well-care covered 100% Medically necessary x-rays and lab tests Physical therapy Mental health care (counseling) Prescription drugs Other necessary medical care

What is not covered by Student Health Insurance Certain exclusions which are listed in our brochure Dental and Vision, unless you are younger than 19

When does NIU bill for insurance If you enroll in 9 or more on-campus credit hours, you will automatically be billed for the insurance. If you enroll in less than 9 on-campus credit hours, we will not bill for insurance. If you want the NIU student health insurance, you have to do our on-line enrollment.

How much will this cost you? The cost is $990.50 for coverage 1/1/17 through 7/31/17. The cost is billed to your bursar’s account. You can add your dependents to the insurance plan. Talk to the Student Health Insurance office staff for more information about this.

Can you cancel this insurance? To cancel the Student Health Insurance plan, you need to show proof that you have other health insurance that meets the United States Affordable Care Act standards. Only insurance plans listed at our website will qualify – www.studentinsurance.niu.edu/shi/international/index.shtml Coverage must be in effect by Friday January 27, 2017. You cannot cancel the NIU student health insurance plan if you have used the insurance!

Can you cancel this insurance? What is not acceptable: Any health insurance plan from your home country Any plan from ICICI Lombard Any plan from www.internationalstudentinsurance.com Any plan that is not ACA compatible

Should you cancel this insurance? Consider keeping the NIU Student Health Insurance plan this semester Required immunizations at Health Services covered 100% Flu shot covered 100% Health Services is convenient You can cancel the insurance plan for next school year!

When you need medical care… Your first choice should be Health Services! Office visits and most services are no cost to students taking on campus classes. If you can’t get into Health Services Make an appointment with a local doctor. If you need to see a doctor right away Go to an immediate care clinic. If it is life-threatening Go to the Hospital Emergency Room.

How does the Student health insurance work? If you go to NIU Health Services: Most things, including vaccinations, immunizations, birth control are covered 100%. You will owe $0 If you go to a doctor off campus or to a hospital: You will owe your annual deductible - $250 plus 20% of your medical bills up to a maximum of $5000 Then the insurance will pay 100% of anything else

ID Cards…. We mail new ID cards to you every year! ID cards are mailed to your local address Be sure to put your name on the mailbox by your apartment! Mail will not be delivered to you unless you do this! Be sure to UPDATE your local address in your MYNIU!

MANDATORY Health Services Screening It is MANDATORY for all new International Students to attend to review your immunizations! Times set aside during orientation week: Wednesday January 11 through Friday January 13: 8:00 to 11:00 am & 1:00 to 3:00 pm I will be available to discuss your insurance options with you. If you decide to use the student insurance to pay for the immunizations, you will not be able to cancel the insurance until fall 2017.
