Building the Learning Community First job of a teacher is to get to know the children you will be with for the year. Our Get- to Know packet We will have you experience one so that we can know you better and you can begin to build connections so that our learning community can begin/

Name Tent Activity Fold the paper into a tent Put the information modeled 3- Step Interview A interviews B B interviews A Introduce your partner around the foursome Look in the packet to find one or two more that you would like to use . Post- it. After activity is finished, have each BT introduce himself/herself to the group by stating: name, school, grade/subject

Our Norms Give unconditional positive regard to the speaker. Put cell phones on vibrate and away. Be an active learner. Suspend disbelief.

We will organize and answer as we go or make sure you get an answer. DISTRIBUTE JOURNALS! First reflection! Please put at least one of these on a post-it note and place it on the chart paper. I will read these and respond.

Clock Buddy- p. 6 in Active Learning Strategies Fill your clock Find your 12 o’clock buddy Talk about the various aspects of the learner that you need to consider as you plan your year (i.e academic skills)

Learning Log - Your reminders What I Find Interesting… Connections When/How Will I Use This In My Classroom?

Knowing the learner

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (1968) Physiological needs: food, water, air, shelter Safety needs: security, freedom from fear, order Belongingness and love: friends, spouse, children Self-esteem: self-respect, achievement, reputation Self-actualization: becoming what the individual has potential to become

William Glasser (1990, 1998) The need to survive and reproduce The need to belong and love The need to have some power The need to have freedom The need to have fun

Basic Needs love and affection sense of belonging self-esteem need for achievement need for power

Pair work-Modified Jigsaw Each pair will take one of the basic needs Read the description and the activities Brainstorm 2-4 other activities that would meet that need One person from each pair forms a circle of 5 to teach each other and have them write the two or three new activitie on their packetes

Let’s review Pair Work- Modified Jigsaw Advantage - specific task No one left out Everyone accountable (when the jigsaw teaching happened)

“The very first day of school is the most important day of the school year… What EFFECTIVE TEACHERS do on the very first day will determine the success of the class.” Harry Wong, (2009), The First Days of School. Next 9 slides 12:45 – 1:00

How to ensure successful classroom management Plan- exactly what you want to happen and what you will do when it doesn’t Implement- Teach the procedure, develop the norms Maintain- Reinforce, redirect, remind

Rules and Procedures/Routines Turn to your neighbor (TTYN) and answer, What is the difference between a rule and a procedure? Rules/norms describe behaviors expected in the class (and imply social skills that need to be learned) Procedures /routines are what makes the room run efficiently and effectively- entering the room, homework procedures, etc.
