DODGE CITY HIGH SCHOOL Career and Technical Education November 22, 2010 Cherry Deges CTE Coordinator Welcome Talk to you today about DCHS and Vocational programs

Career & Technical Education Vo Tech vs. CTE Vocational Education “Then” For a few students For a few “jobs” 6-7 Program Areas In-lieu of Academics High School Focused Career & Technical Education “Now” For All students For All “careers” 16 Clusters – 79+ Pathways Aligns/Supports Academics High School & College Partnerships

Career and Technical Education Develop skills for workplace and life Ties education to students’ interests and ambitions Promotes strong academic foundation Explores career choices Moving toward Career Clusters and Pathways To be clear – CTE is not a new label for the same system. While CTE is built upon the rich history and tradition of vocational education, it has adapted to meet the dynamic demands of the global economy. CTE programs at the secondary, postsecondary and adult levels prepare individuals for a wide range of careers…CTE reflects the modern workplace. And since the majority of careers require a postsecondary credential, high-quality CTE programs incorporate rigorous academic and technical standards, as well as critical workplace skills such as problem solving, communication and teamwork, to ensure career and college success for its students.
