CIVITAS 2016-2020 What is CIVITAS?

Introducing CIVITAS The initiative in brief – www.civitas.eu What does CIVITAS stand for? CIVITAS - cleaner and better transport in cities – stands for CIty-VITAlity-Sustainability. What is CIVITAS? CIVITAS is a network of cities for cities to achieve cleaner, better connected transport solutions in Europe and beyond. CIVITAS in 4 key points: Living “labs” & research projects Network of cities for cities Public Private Partnerships Political commitment

Why transport & energy efficiency are high priorities for local authorities URBAN GROWTH 75% of Europe’s citizens live in cities. POLLUTION 40% of CO2 from road transport. 70% of other pollutants from urban traffic. 3.7 million early deaths due to air pollution mostly in cities occur every year. PHYSICAL INACTIVITY Millions of hours are spent in urban and regional congestion . 2/3rds of the adult population in the EU do not reach recommended levels of activity. 4th leading risk factor for death worldwide. (WHO, 2014). !

Participating CIVITAS cities Citizens Road users Public transport users Fleet owners and municipal fleets Special needs communities Transport professionals Policy makers The CIVITAS Initiative brings cities, transport professionals and the wider public together to test and implement innovative measures for cleaner, more efficient, and more sustainable urban mobility. It also brings together practitioners and policy makers from across Europe to advocate for a transition to sustainable urban mobility, and provides its growing community opportunities to network with and learn from one another. Measures are reaching 52.4 million citizens
