Getting started…. Flipping classroom concept Planning to flip Technology consideration Poll Everywhere demo Getting started….

COURSE DELIVERY FORMAT Traditional, F2F Classroom No class time is replaced. Expectation - the classroom is the primary place for learning Flipped Classroom No class time is replaced. Some class activities are converted into independent study; done at home. The expectation is to prepare and use class time to reflect and practice what you learned in independent study. Hybrid Classroom Some class time is replace by asynchronous learning Expectation is to master content and come to class prepared to move on with new content. Fully Online Classroom All class time is replace by asynchronous learning Expectation – Students don’t have to come to class.

Challenges of traditional classroom Students learn at different paces Limited concept engagement: Not enough time for deeper conversations about important topic

Basic principals of flipped classroom: What is traditionally done in classroom can be done at home. What is done at home can be done in classroom for deeper learning In-class time is used for higher-order thinking skills and application to complex problems. It may include collaborative learning, case-based learning, peer instruction and problem sets. Create active learning experiences for students where the instructor coaches and guides them. Benefits of flipped classroom Students learn more deeply: Learn anywhere, anytime, on your own pace Come to class prepared for active participation Increased time for collaboration in and out of classroom More time to devote to application of concepts More feedback for students and instructor Benefits of flipped classroom

It’s not all about me. It’s about: What is best for students Embracing or at least accepting change Staying current with technology

Plan for flipping Identify content you can effectively flip Re-organize content Identify best format to deliver content Identify technology and develop skills Convert content into the appropriate format Set clear expectations and provide instructions Teach and revise to improve course

Be creative, use resources you have

Don't reinvent the wheel MANY WAYS TO FLIP Find OER (Open Educational Resources) Khan Academy SBCTC – Open Course Library MIT Open courseware W3Schools.com Etc. Digitize existing content Develop your own content Distribute content electronically Allow interaction out of classroom Don't reinvent the wheel http://www.michaelcovel.com/2013/03/24/learning-from-the-best-stop-trying-to-reinvent-the-wheel/

Use technology & OER For Efficiency
