Safinah Ltd Independent coating and corrosion prevention consultants Minimising risk from coatings or Paint misbehaving

Safinah Marine and Heavy Duty Coatings Safinah’s Mission: To provide coatings advice to reduce coating risk and minimise costs. A Skilled Team of Professionals with Broad Experience Base Over 350 years experience within the group at senior levels within the coatings industry. Safinah will: only add cost to the bottom line if brought in after coating has failed. save money if used as prevention.

Case Studies Take time for all things: great haste makes great waste….

Marine Case Study 1 year old – Oil tankers Grit! Safinah significantly reduced cost and extent of claim Claim against shipyard for corrosion of cargo tank linings Safinah found that the corrosion was only superficial: Paint underneath intact and providing good protection. Safinah suggested a single over coat. (scraping would roughen up the surface - matt surface would be difficult to keep clean).

Marine Case Study Bulk Carrier - Vessel under 1 year old. Corrosion in WBT: root cause analysis 2 previous inspections: By specialist coating contractor & inspection company Both agreed extent of breakdown 1% of total area within the warranty therefore no claim. Owner contacted Safinah for another inspection. Safinah: would not add value by another inspection would look at documentation to see if there was a legitimate technical claim Findings: DFT varied from 60-600um - Poor QC by yard. Likely that low DFT areas would break down.

Marine Case Study 30% cost saving on naval owner budget for 2 New Builds (saving £10 million per ship) Aircraft carriers use a standard specification from previous vessels. Safinah wrote a functional specification which decreased man hours. (4 coats reduced to 2 coats at no extra risk). 100% claim avoidance for client on catastrophic failure claim by root cause identification (saving $50 million) Catastrophic failure of chemical tank lining coatings in 8 ships. Safinah established that between the order being placed and the paint delivered, the paint company had changed the paint formulation.

Marine Case Study 15% productivity improvement on coating work by providing a functional paint specification (Saving 5,000 man hours per vessel) US shipyard using standard specification for the last 10 years. Specification did not have a long enough overcoating interval. The surface had to be rubbed down prior to being overcoated. Safinah developed a functional specification with a product with an indefinite overcoating interval.

Yacht Case Study Mega Yacht Root Cause Analysis Owner complained of yellowing of coating. External analysis stated sand on the surface of the paint (believable as vessel moored near arid conditions). However, Safinah’s analysis indicated that TiO2 particles used in the paint were coated with silica. External analysis house did not understand technology so didn’t understand the results!

Industrial and Energy Case Study Reduced Claim to Insurer by 50% Catastrophic coating failure on 3 platforms Caused by poor surface preparation and contamination Oil major claimed against insurance company, Safinah’s client Safinah: Reviewed proposed repair specification. Reduced claim to insurer by 50% by providing a repair procedure to give the protection required without increasing risk.

Industrial and Energy Case Study Root Cause Analysis Interzone 2000 specified for storage tanks. Contractor accused subcontractor of applying the wrong coating after external analysis showed the coating contained urethane. Test panel showed correct coating was used. Safinah analysis of product data sheets showed coating broken down due to poor specification coating could not withstand high aromatic content / temperature of material being stored.

Industrial and Energy Case Study Worked with client to select suitable paint spec on FPSO project cutting paint costs by 50%. Carried out technical assessments of bids by performing functional specification. Owner tended to go for most expensive specification. Worked with owner to show that half the of cost would give the same coatings performance. Reduced claim on passive fire protection on FPSO by 75%, by analysis of shipyard coating records Vessel converted to FPSO. Passive Fire Protection Coatings started to detach. Analysis of shipyard records showed that only 25% of the applicators had been trained.

Summary Paint very rarely misbehaves! Cost of coating failure always underestimated as it is such a small part of the initial capex or operating costs More likely to be human error: Surface preparation, Application, Specification Look at all the evidence Beware of taking information at face value.
