Last time in Romans 5 Because of Adam, we were born into sin Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Last time in Romans 5 Because of Adam, we were born into sin Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Because of Christ, we were born into righteousness Romans 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

Last time in Romans 5 God’s grace erased death & gave life Romans 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. 20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

ROMANS Dying to Live ROMANS 6:1-11

The Question Posed Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? or “If we are covered by the grace of Jesus, than isn’t that just license for us to sin knowing that Jesus “has us covered”.”

Saved to Serve Hebrews 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: 14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

KEY POINT #1 Salvation is not a get out of hell free card. God demands righteous living.

KEY POINT #2 Salvation was not earned so it can’t be lost (Rom 8:38-39). BUT God still demands righteous living

Saved to Serve If it’s everlasting, then you can’t lose it… John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Saved to Serve So the question, “is it cool if we live sinfully since Christ’s grace saved us from sin?” Paul’s response is 2 God forbid.

Question Reframed Justification not only means “just as if I never sinned”, Justification also means “just as if I died and rose with Jesus”. 2b…..How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Our justification identifies us with death. We are dead.

Dead to Sin 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Paul is using the word baptism figuratively to imply the shared experience of Christ’s death. Ex.1 Cor. 10:1-3

KEY POINT #3 We defeated sin eternally through death at the cross. We defeat sin daily through death at the cross. Rom 12:1,2

Alive in Christ 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Example of Lazarus – John 11

Alive in Christ Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

Alive in Christ 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

Alive in Christ 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: What God is telling us is that he counts us equal participants in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Alive in Christ Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Free from Sin 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

Free from Sin Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Free from Sin 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Reckon means to determine. Determination is not necessarily a feeling that you conjure as much as a discipline you cultivate

KEY POINT #4 If we don’t daily reckon ourselves dead to sin and alive to Christ then we risk frustrating God’s grace.

Free from Sin The only way to cultivate a discipline is to study, to examine, to exercise it, to take account for it as it impacts your life daily life.

Free from Sin Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. 5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth;

Are you dead with Christ? Are you risen with him?
