CHURCH OF CHRIST at November 1, 2009 Don’t Forget: Family Night Out @ Ladies’ Retreat Hebron
2
All Things are Become New Romans 8 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (II Corinthians 5:17)
3
A New Law Romans 8:1-3 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh
4
A New Law What kind of law was the former law? –For the Jew, the law of Moses –For us, the law of the world Romans 10:3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
5
A New Law New in essence –Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death –Consider the summary statements of the two laws: Exodus 20:1-17 Thou shalt not… Matthew 22:36-40 Thou shalt…
6
A New Law New in ability –Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh –Hebrews 10:11-12 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God
7
A New Mind Romans 8:5-8 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. –“Mind”—to interest oneself in; to desire –“the carnal mind”—the mind of the flesh
8
A New Mind The transformation must include a change of desire and interest –Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him –What follows? Wives, husbands, children, fathers, servants, masters The mind of the flesh is not compatible with God
9
A New Spirit Romans 8:9-11 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
10
A New Spirit The spirit is the immaterial part of us –I Samuel 1:15 And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord –Job 7:11 Therefore I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul (I Thessalonians 5:23; Hebrews 4:12)
11
A New Spirit A new spirit is not some literal indwelling –It is called the “Spirit of God” the “Spirit of Christ” and “Christ” in this passage A new spirit represents an internal change governed by the teaching of the Spirit (Romans 8:16) A new spirit benefits us in two ways: –It quickens us spiritually (8:10) –It quickens us physically (8:11)
12
A New Father Romans 8:14-17 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together.
13
A New Father The Jews’ father: Abraham –Matthew 3:9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham The world’s father: Satan –John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do… The church’s Father: God
14
A New Hope Romans 8:24-25 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it –The world’s hope: Seen Undependable –The Christian’s hope: Unseen Dependable
15
A New Perspective Romans 8:28-39 –A broader perspective (28) –A surer perspective (29-30) –A victorious perspective (31-39)
16
Are you a new creature? Romans 6:1-4 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
17
Consider During the Lord’s Supper: Philippians 2:5-9 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
