Matter Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Almost everything around us is considered matter. What about a rock, pen or pencil, glass beaker, textbook, air we breath, fire, plasma, a person’s shadow, lightning. Which are matter and support your position.

Volume Volume is simply the amount of space a unit of matter occupies. Measurement of liquid volume is in liters or milliliters and solid volume is measured in meters3, centimeters3, or millimeters3.

Solid Volume Solid volume is calculated by multiplying the length X width X height. It will be expressed in cm3 or m3.

Liquid Volume Graduated cylinders are used to accurately measure volume. To accurately read the volume the graduated cylinder must be on a level surface and read the meniscus (the curved line at the bottom of the liquid) at eye level.

Volume of an Irregular Shaped Solid We can use a graduated cylinder and find an initial water reading and place the irregular shaped solid in to the water and see how much water is DISPLACED by the solid and calculate the volume by subtracting to initial reading from the final reading. We must also use the proven formula. 1 ml of water equals 1 cm3 volume

Mass Mass is a measure of how much of something there is and is measured with a triple beam balance. It is measured in kilograms, grams, or milligrams. Mass of an object is always the same no matter where it is measured in the universe. The official cylinder of mass is equal to 1 liter of pure water at 4° C. One cylinder is in Maryland and the other is in France.

Weight Weight is a measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object. Measured using a spring scale. Weight is expressed in Newtons. Weight varies based on where it is located in the universe.

Weight vs Mass Example 5 Kg on Earth is about 5000g/100g= 50N 1 Newton is approximately 100 grams on Earth. This will change at different locations in the Universe. Example 5 Kg on Earth is about 5000g/100g= 50N

Review What is matter? What do we have to measure to calculate a solid volume? What do we use to obtain a liquid volume? True or False, Mass is constant throughout the universe? What do we measure it with? What is the unit of force weight is based on and what do we measure it with? What is the formula that allows us to convert solid volume into liquid volume.

Density Density equals mass divided by volume. Density= mass/volume

Density Is used as a comparison of different materials compared to the density of pure water. Density of pure water= 1.0 gram/ml which is the same as the volume of 1.0 gram/cm3

Density Materials with a density of greater than 1 will sink in water. Materials with a density of less than 1 will float on water.

Density Formulas Mass= Density X Volume Volume= Mass/Density Density= Mass/Volume Mass= Density X Volume Volume= Mass/Density There is a way to use these formulas without having to remember them or rearranging the original formula. It is the Density Triangle!!
