HORIZON 2020 Call identifier: FOSTERING INDUSTRIAL SYMBIOSIS FOR A SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE INTENSIVE INDUSTRY ACROSS THE EXTENDED CONSTRUCTION VALUE CHAIN HORIZON 2020 Call identifier: WASTE-1-2014: Moving towards a circular economy through industrial symbiosis Type of action: Innovation action Starting date: 01/09/2015 End date: 29/02/2020 Duration in months: 54 Project Number: 642154 Project acronym: FISSAC Project Coordinator: Acciona Infraestructuras

Partners 26 partners from 9 countries (8 EU Member States and Turkey) general contractor and engineering/construction companies non-profit research organisations SMEs in different sustainable business fields public authorities manufacturing and energy intensive industry organisations standardisation and certification bodies local and regional recycling / sustainable resource management organisations.

FISSAC scientific & technical goals The project will contribute to: Innovative technological and non-technological processes to transform waste into valuable secondary raw materials To develop and optimize new cost-effective construction products through the total or partial replacement of virgin raw materials by higher amounts of secondary high-purity raw materials from industrial waste. To validate the recycling processes and the new eco-innovative products at pre-industrial and industrial scale. To demonstrate the new solutions through 5 different case studies considering the whole supply chain of the industrial symbiosis: the manufacturing processes, the technical performance of the new products and their implementation at real scale in construction applications. To develop an integrated Industrial Symbiosis Management Software Tool able to address a Life Cycle and a GIS based approach FISSAC involves stakeholders at all levels of the construction and demolition value chain to develop a methodology, and software platform to facilitate information exchange, that can support industrial symbiosis networks and replicate pilot schemes at local and regional levels. The model will be based on three sustainability pillars: environmental (with a lifecycle approach) economic social (taking into consideration stakeholders engagement and impact on society).

The concept Virgin raw materials Industry Waste Secondary raw materials Innovative construction products Industry

Construction & Demolition Steel Secondary Aluminium Ceramics Natural Stone Chemical: Rubber Construction & Demolition Fine ceramics Glass Steel slags: Aluminium waste slag Ceramic waste Marble slurry Used tyres EAF LF Plastics Wood Eco-Cement New Green Concretes Innovative Ceramic Tiles Rubber Wood Plastic Composites Innovative materials and construction products: with improved characteristics and reduced carbon footprint

Current and expected impacts New eco-cement New green concrete Innovative ceramic tiles Rubber wood plastic composite Employment: new job opportunities, training needs on circular economy Social behaviour & citizen engagement (Social Advisory Board, Living Labs to gather views, share knowledge develop prototypes, encourage sustainable behaviour.. ) 15% reduction of waste generation [170,298 kt/y] 12% gains in productivity for waste treatment [30.36 Mt/y] Volume of resources & products from waste: Total savings for the EU- concrete sector up to 25 M€ 1,200 M€ – 1,350 M€ associated with consumption of Portland cement 15% reduction of waste generation 12% gains in productivity for waste treatment 20% in energy efficiency and GHG savings SPIRE KPIs related to IS introduced to quantify FISSAC model impact Environmental Economic Technological Social
