Total Resource and Energy Efficiency Management System for Process Industries The sole responsibility for the content of this document lies with the authors. It does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the European Union. The European Commission is not responsible for any use that may be made of the information contained therein MAESTRI project Marco Estrela ISQ SPIRE PROJECTS‘ CONFERENCE 2016 20/04/2016 Brussels This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 680570.

2 Scientific/Technical goals of the supported area Improve resource efficiency, energy efficiency and the emission performance by 20%, and reduce energy and resources costs by 20% MAESTRI will develop a management system to promote and simplify the implementation of the Total Efficiency Framework that will assist in the identification and assessment of the main inefficiencies in resource and energy consumption, and support the decision making process for the implementation of added-value improvements.

3 Current and Expected impact(s) of the supported area Technological  Highly replicable and flexible solutions because of the software platform’s flexibility and scalability, which enables customizations/configurations according to the needs of each company;  Enable the process industries to achieve breakthroughs regarding a cost effective reduction in the use of resources;  Enhance cross-sectoral interaction (equipment/system provider and equipment/ system user).

4 Current and Expected impact(s) of the supported area Economic/Social  Strengthen European process industries competitiveness;  Improve resource efficiency and energy efficiency performance by 20%;  Reduce energy and resources costs by over 20%, through the combination of the overall efficiency and eco-efficiency performance and resource and energy usage;  Creation of more robust and highly productive organisations, better jobs;  Underpin people engagement for energy and resource efficiency, facilitated by the management tool.

5 Current and Expected impact(s) of the supported area Environmental  Reduction of process industry environmental footprint trough an improvement of 20% in resource efficiency and emission performance;  Reduction of residues disposed of as waste by maximizing the “waste2resource” ratio via in-plant symbiosis and outside the plant (value- chain symbiosis);  Reduction of both gaseous and liquid emissions (e.g. NOx, CO2, BOD, COD, etc.).

6 Technical cross-cutting issues that would increase the overall impact Total Efficiency Framework – integrated framework for a holistic resource and energy efficiency assessment in processing industries Efficiency assessment integrated module – flexible tool to assess and optimize the process efficiency assessment in processing industries Process efficiency simulation and optimization model – tool to support and optimize sustainable decision making process and identification of potential improvements Improved management system – which integrates eco efficiency aspects and is focus on continuous improvement. KPI for overall efficiency and eco- efficiency profiles in process industries. Toolkit for Industrial Symbiosis – to provide the first steps for companies to understand and approach industrial symbiosis Open Source IoT platform – to support process industries supplying sustainability management tools based on a Service oriented Architecture.

7 Non-technical cross-cutting issues that would increase the overall impact Training courses to industrial community on applying Management System oriented on Eco and Continuous Improvement Realization of industrial pilots across different SPIRE sectors – to apply and validate the MAESTRI integrated approach in real industrial conditions. Library of case studies on industrial symbiosis – to provide examples of successful industrial symbioses and extract information about waste reuse for the open source database of waste. Business model and guidelines for customization services of IoT platform Establishment of a Stakeholders group International conference covering the main research areas (eco-efficiency, industrial symbiosis, management system, motivation strategies, IoT). Workshops Different dissemination channels (website, Twitter, LinkedIn. etc.)
