Unit 2 preparing to write an argument Today you are going to learn the elements of ARGUMENT so that you can find them in an article. You’ll know you understand argumentative writing when you write your essay about the value of a college education.

Do now… In your journal….(THINK PAIR SHARE) Make a bulleted list of what is required when writing an argumentative essay, including the PURPOSE of an argumentative essay Share with your elbow partner As a group: compile a complete OUTLINE as well as DEFINITIONS of the elements of an augmentative essay I will choose one to place under the document camera. If you are missing any of the components, copy them into your notebook. RETEACH/Go over ELEMENTS of ARGUMENT

3 purposes for argument: Change reader/listener point of view Ask reader/listener to take ACTION Gain acceptance for the writers ideas about a problem or issue

Discussion: In your groups You have just completed your interview narrative about a person who attended college. Discuss these questions: What did you learn about the benefits of college/vocational/technical school/military service? What CLAIMS did the interviewee make? List 3-5 benefits of college/vocational/technical school/military service as mentioned by the person you interviewed. SHARE out to the whole class

“Five Ways Ed Pays” Turn to page 58 in your textbook We will watch the video twice As we watch, take notes on the chart to support the CENTRAL CLAIM. Include QUOTES.

As a group, decide which claim is most persuasive and which is the least persuasive and WHY Share out to the class. Paper prompt: Read the paper prompt on page 56. Summarize in your own words what you need to KNOW to complete the assessment. In your notebook, tell me what your CLAIM is right now – does POST SECONDARY EDUCATION MATTER? Explain giving me two reasons.

Practice: You are going to read and highlight an argumentative essay, “Should We Ban Plastic Bags?” Each table is responsible for a component of the argumentative essay. First DEFINE your component on the sentence strip, then highlight your part: Table #1 Claim – Green Table #2 and #3 EVIDENCE – Blue Table #4 Concession – Yellow Table #5 Refutation – Pink Table #6 Call to Action – Purple Present and Defend!

Do now… Each table has a different argumentative essay to read. Read and highlight the article as follows: Claim – Green Counterclaim – underline or ORANGE EVIDENCE – Blue Concession – Yellow Refutation – Pink Call to Action – Purple

Turn to page 61 and find the terms ANALOGY AND FIGURATIVE ANALOGY Turn to page 61 and find the terms ANALOGY AND FIGURATIVE ANALOGY. COPY THE WORDS AND DEFINITIONS INTO YOUR JOURNAL. On page 61, there are 5 analogies. Grab a piece of white paper and markers to create a “poster” of your analogy! Read the analogy Write a paraphrase or explanation of the quote Tell me what each analogy suggests regarding education Tell me why or why not the analogy is insightful Decide and tell me why the analogy is figurative or literal Table One and Six - #1 Two - #2 Three - #3 Four - #4 Five - $5

On your own… In your journal, decided which analogy appeals to you the most and WHY. How effective might these analogies be to use as evidence to support a claim about education? Discuss with your group. Homework: Read and annotate the article on page 63. Highlight the CLAIM and EVIDENCE. Answer ALL the questions on page 64!

Target: Identify rhetorical appeal: Ethos pathos logos Today, you will take notes on the elements of Rhetorical Appeal. In your notebook, brainstorm everything that you know about rhetorical appeal. Take NOTES on the graphic organizer that I provide. Staple or tape it into your journal.

Today you will analyze commercials for Rhetorical appeal Go to my teacher website. Click on Commercial Commercial List Each table will analyze a different commercial. For homework, you will complete another analysis of either a commercial or an advertisement.

SMELL strategy Turn to page 71 and read the paragraph on the SMELL strategy. Highlight the 5 essential parts of the SMELL strategy. Create a chart in your notebook using the acronym. Complete question #6.

Timed write…page 72 Some politicians have called for increasing the number of college graduates. Write an INTRODUCTION and at least one to two paragraphs supporting a claim that we: A. Need more college graduates OR B. Do NOT need more college graduates Orient the reader and set up the problem Sequence evidence from your experiences or what you have read to support your claim – use ETHOS, PATHOS OR LOGOS to engage the reader Use transition and parallel structure

Target: identify evidence and their purpose select evidence, appeals and techniques for an audience Turn to page 73 Pick a partner and complete the chart on pages 73-74. On your own… List the texts you cited and describe the audience.

Do now… When you are writing a text to a friend what type of language do you use? If you were writing to an adult (teacher, minister, advisor) how would you change your language? Write about what you did over the weekend to each audience . Read, “An Early Start on College” from page 75-76 Identify the AUDIENCE (question 5) Answer the Key Ideas and Details Questions

Read & annotate the 2 articles on pages 78 and 79 Annotate for the following: Elements of argument (claim, evidence, counterclaim, refutation, concession, call to action) Create a KEY for your annotations, as we did in class! Highlight/annotate evidence YOU could use in your argumentative essay. Interact with the text – write questions, comments, ect.

After reading: Turn to page 81 and fill in the chart which compares the 2 articles. Answer questions 4-7 on page 82
