Target: Deconstruct a writing prompt

2 FOR THIS UNIT YOU WILL TAKE A POSITION ON THE EXTENT TO WHICH ONE’S CULTURE INFLUENCES ONE’S VIEW OF THE WORLD. Do now…in your journal, tell me what extent your cultural identity influences how you view the world. Give me concrete examples. Read the EA 2 prompt on page 47 and summarize (in your journal) what you need to do to complete the EA

5 Before Reading: Write about a time that you found yourself in a completely different environment. What was it like? Were you overwhelmed? Surprised? Uncomfortable? During Reading: Read “Where Worlds Collide” As you read, it is your job to: Mark the text for ALLUSIONS Mark the text for DETAILS that suggest the perspective of the new arrivals Answer the Key Ideas and Details questions in the MY NOTES section

Turn to page 57 and read “AFTER READING” Write the definition for SYNTHESIS and SYNTHESIS PROMPT in your journal. Focusing idea/question to consider: How do parents influence our perspectives on our culture? How do writers use symbolism to convey theme? Choose one and with a partner, answer question #4

7 After Reading: Using the TIQA, complete the persuasive writing prompt on page 52. Here is your question: To what extent does one’s background affect his or her perception of a given situation. Discuss this prompt with your elbow partner, especially focus on the words “extent” and “perception.” Start with a TAG (Title, author, genre) statement that presents your claim. Use textual evidence from “Where Worlds Collide” to support your response – including juxtaposed images and allusions.

In your journal….(THINK PAIR SHARE) Make a bulleted list of what is required when writing an argumentative essay, including the PURPOSE of an argumentative essay Share with your elbow partner As a group: compile a complete OUTLINE as well as DEFINITIONS of the elements of an augmentative essay I will choose one to place under the document camera. If you are missing any of the components, copy them into your notebook. RETEACH/Go over ELEMENTS of ARGUMENT
