How to use Microsoft PowerPoint

Introduction These screen shots and instructions can be used to show students and/or teachers how to use Microsoft PowerPoint The screen shots were taken using PowerPoint 2010 for PC There is a separate version of instruction with screen shots for PowerPoint 2010 for MAC later in the presentation Note: If you have an earlier version of PowerPoint the essential components are the same. (Although, you might find them in a slightly different location) The following slides show what is located under each of the Toolbar Tabs

Microsoft PowerPoint PowerPoint is a presentation software program that is part of the Microsoft Office package Using PowerPoint, you can create screens that effectively incorporate colorful text, images, graphs, tables and movies Animate text and illustrations and set up transitions between slides Print out materials to distribute when you are making a presentation

PowerPoint Presentations Terminology Graphics application program used for creating presentations, speeches, slides, etc. Slides Each screen that is displayed during a presentation Layout The way things are arranged on a slide Slide Show View Takes up the full computer screen. You can see how your graphics, timings, movies, animated elements and transition effects will look during the actual show Transitions A set of transitional display effects that move from one slide to the next Animation Animations are used to add a special visual to text or an object Text Box Use text boxes to place text anywhere on a slide Templates Templates give the presentation a fully designed, professional appearance

Home (Starting the Presentation) New Slide allows you to create more slides of information Simply type in your title and text information into the text boxes Note: the layout of the text boxes can be changed under the Layout tab

Arranging Shapes Arrange Adjust objects on the slide including objects order, grouping, arrangement and alignment

Format Format Fill Text Boxes and shapes with Color Specify the line color, width and line style for the selected shape Reorder items

Themes (Choosing a theme for the Presentation) Select color variations, fonts and background colors Choose from a variety of Themes for your presentation

Select New and choose the appropriate number of Rows and Columns Tables Table Layouts Fill and Line Effects Select New and choose the appropriate number of Rows and Columns

Charts Insert a variety of Charts including Column, Line, Pie, Bar, Area and Scatter Graphs

SmartArt PowerPoint has pre-designed SmartArt diagrams including Lists, Cycle and Relationship that you can use to display your information

Animations Animations – animate text and images on your slides with a variety of Entrance, Emphasis and Exit effects.

Transition effects between slides Transitions Transition effects between slides

Slide Show View your Slide Show to test the animations, transitions and how the layout appears in full screen view. Set up your show to have each slide display for a certain period of time before it automatically advances to the next slide.
