Welcome to Ladybird Class

In the summer term children will be formally assessed In the summer term children will be formally assessed. Year 1 children will complete the phonic screening test. Year 2 children will take SATs in reading, mathematics (2 papers) and English grammar, punctuation and spelling.

You can really help your child to do well this year by: Hearing them read, most nights. Helping them with their spellings, using our precursive handwriting. Working on their targets for mathematics. Being “mathematically aware.” Counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s.

When I am reading I am …

The children might be learning mathematics in a slightly different way to how you have been taught.

Place value and partitioning The children will be completing a lot of work on place value. They need to know that 457= 400+50+7 They need to know the values of the digits in relation to place value. They will have lots of opportunities to make larger numbers with Diene Blocks. This knowledge will then lead into the four mathematical operations. In addition and subtraction we “regroup” as a “fair swap” to talk about exchanging 10 ones for one stick of ten. e.g.

This lays the foundations for column addition.

The children are also taught to represent number sentences as part, part, whole. 6+4=10

We will be researching and thinking about the questions, “Who was the better nurse: Florence Nightingale or Mary Seacole?” and “If you won a one-way ticket, where in the world would you go?” We will continue with our “Talk for Writing” and learn the story of, “The Little Red Hen”. Then our Literacy will be based on stories about dragons. In Science we will be learning about how different animals grow and develop. We will also be looking at how we use electricity safely and making circuits. Our ongoing work will be looking at the changing seasons and how this affects the plants and animals in our local environment.
