2. How to help your child
First and foremost, support your child and reassure your child that there is nothing to worry about and that they should always just try their best. Praise and encourage their efforts.
Please don’t mention the dreaded SATs word! SATs will be taken in May.
The phonics screening check will be taken in June.
Reading, spelling and arithmetic are always good to practice. Children should read for at least 15 minutes per day.

Comprehension is a very important skill in Year 2
The new reading test for Year 2 pupils will involve two separate papers:
•Paper 1 consists of a selection of texts totalling 400 to 700 words, with questions interspersed (30 minutes)
•Paper 2 comprises a reading booklet of a selection of passages totalling 800 to words. Children will write their answers in a separate booklet (40 minutes)
•Both papers will not be strictly timed, as the tests are not intended to assess children’s ability to work at speed. The texts in the reading papers will cover a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, and will get progressively more difficult towards the end of the test.

8. The new grammar, punctuation and spelling test has an emphasis on technical aspects of grammar.
Paper 1: spelling consists of an answer booklet for pupils to complete and a test transcript to be read by the test administrator. Pupils will have approximately 15 minutes to complete the test but it is not strictly timed, writing the 20 missing words in the answer booklet.
Paper 2: questions consist of a single test paper focusing on pupils’ knowledge of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Pupils will have approximately 20 minutes to complete the questions in the test paper but it is not strictly timed.

Assesses pupils’ confidence and mathematical fluency with whole numbers, place-value and counting.
The test consists of a single test paper. It is expected that the test will take approximately 20 minutes to complete but it is not strictly timed.
Children will not be able to use any tools such as calculators or number lines

12. Paper 2: Mathematical Fluency, Problem-Solving and Reasoning, (35 mins)
Assesses pupils’ mathematical fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills.
This test consists of a single test paper.
The paper includes a practice question and 5 aural questions. After the aural questions, the time for the remainder of the paper should be approximately 30 minutes.
Children will not be able to use any tools such as calculators or number lines

There is no test for writing. Teachers use samples of your child’s writing to establish what standard the children are writing at. Examples of the different standards are available below -

15. SATs Support
Some children will have additional support if we think they may need it.
In Maths children are allowed to have the question read to them but will not be given any further information. They will have to read the signs and symbols for themselves eg +
In reading adult support will only be for encouragement, as it is a reading assessment, the children have to read the passage and questions for themselves.
There is no formal writing assessment
Children who are working well below the national standard may not take part

16. Marking The assessments will be marked by the teachers.
The Reading , Maths and English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling tests will be given a ‘raw score’ and a ‘scaled score’ (scaled scores will be released in July 2018).
Scores awarded from the assessments are used alongside our on-going teacher assessment to determine the standard your child is working at by the end of Year 2
Writing will be ‘Teacher Assessed’ internally.
We will cross moderate with other schools to ensure that our judgements are consistent with other schools.

18. Supporting reading
Children should read to an experienced reader every day for at least 15 minutes.
Read to your child every day. Talk about the story before, during and afterwards – discuss the plot, the characters, their feelings and actions, how it makes you feel, predict what will happen and encourage your child to have their own opinions.
Complete all the activities in RWI books daily.

19. If they start reading for 20 minutes a night in Reception, by the end of year 6, Student A will have read for the equivalent of 60 school days, student B will have read for 12 school days and Student C will have read for 3.

20. Supporting writing
Practice handwriting. Watch your child to ensure that they are forming their letters correctly.
Practice spelling words
Encourage opportunities for writing such as letters to family or friends, shopping lists, notes or reminders, stories or poems.
Good readers become good writers! Identify good writing features when reading (eg, vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation).
Show your appreciation: praise and encourage, even for small successes!

21. Supporting Maths Practise timetables as often as you can
Practise counting in different amounts forwards and backwards
Encourage opportunities for telling the time
Encourage opportunities for counting coins and money eg finding amounts and calculating change when shopping
Identify, weigh or measure quantities and amounts in the kitchen or recipes
Play games involving logic, such as dominoes, card games, connect 4, draughts and chess
