Pathways to Graduation Northwest High School Pathways to Graduation

Goal: To understand the new graduation requirement as it pertains to my child

All students must obtain 20 credits to graduate high school (No change). 4 Credits in English/ Language Arts (English 1-4) 4 Credits in Mathematics (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and a 4th math 3 Credits in social studies (World History, American History, and Government) 3 Credits in Science (Physical Science, Biology, and a 3rd upper level science) 1 Semester of Health 2 Semesters of Physical Education (.25 credits each=.5 credits total) *This requirement can be waived by participating and completing 2 sports seasons or being a member of our marching band for 2 full years 4 Elective Credits 1 Semester (.5 Credits) of Money Management 1 Semester (.5 Credits) of Computer Applications

In addition to earning the 20 credits, students must meet 1 of the 3 following requirements (New). 1. Earn a total of 18 points out of 35 points available on the 7 End- of-Course State Assessments. These tests are produced by the American Institutes for Research and are referred to as the AIR Test. English I English II Biology American History Government Algebra I Geometry

Tests Are Scored 5=Advanced, 4=Accelerated, 3=Proficient, 2=Basic, 1=Limited Students must earn 4 of their 18 points in Math Students must earn 4 of their 18 points in English/ Language Arts Students must earn 6 of their 18 points in Science and Social Studies Students who did not earn a 3 will have the opportunity to retest Dec 12-Dec 16 at Northwest Students taking AP classes will not take end-of-course exams, but rather use their AP test (5 or 4 on AP=5, 3 on AP=4, 2 on AP=3) Students taking CCP will have grade transferred (A or B in CCP=5, C in CCP=4, D in CCP=3)

Pathway 2 of 3 2. Earn a non-remediation score on the College Readiness Assessment (ACT) All Juniors will take ACT in Spring ACT College Readiness Scores Writing 18 Mathematics 22 Reading 22 Science 22

Pathway 3 of 3 The Industry Credential and Workforce Readiness option means the students must earn 12points through a State Board of Education-approved, in a single career field, and achieve a workforce readiness score on the assessment. The Class of 2018 must earn a total of 13 points across the 3 WorkKeys sections (reading, applied mathematics, and locating information).

What now? Is my son or daughter on pace to graduate? Is my son or daughter required to retake any or all of the EOC exams? What are my child’s scores? When will the retake happen? What is Northwest doing to help prepare students for the retake? What happens if they do not score better on the retake? What can I do to help my child prepare for their retake?

3 Categories of Juniors Those already having met the graduation requirement of 18 points on EOC exams. Those on pace to meet the graduation requirement of 18 points on the EOC exams. Those NOT on pace to reach 18 points on the EOC exams.

Does my student need to retake tests? For Juniors to refrain from having to make up tests: Must have met the 4 required points for ELA and Math, AND Must have scored an average of 2 or higher in Biology and American History, AND Must have accumulated at least 16 points in the first 2 years of high school

Does my student need to retake tests? For Sophomores to refrain from having to make up tests: Must have scored a 2 or higher on both the ELA I and Algebra I tests, AND Must have accumulated at least 5 points Examples: A student scores a 2 on ELA test and 3 on Algebra I test= No make-ups needed A student scores a 1 on the ELA and a 5 on the Algebra I test= Make up ELA test A student scores a 2 on ELA test and a 2 on Algebra I test=Make up both

What’s Next? Retake tests between December 12-16 Prepare for the retake PLATO EOC Test review Window opens Monday, Oct 28 Students will be required to spend a minimum amount of time on PLATO Students taking one test= 20 hours minimum Students taking two tests= 15 hours minimum on each test Students taking three tests= 10 hours minimum on each test Retake tests between December 12-16
