The University of Waikato We partner with Cognition to deliver the mathematics contract with a focus in the Central North Ministry region

CORE Education NZCER Waikato-Tainui College for Research and Development

Te Toi Tupu offers the following PD development: Blended e-Learning Professional Learning and Development Programme Digi-Advisors Enabling e-Learning e-Learning Planning Framework Gifted and talented Education Mathematics National Aspiring Principals' Programme New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) Science Virtual Professional Learning and Development (VPLD)

Maths in nature http://www.youtube.com/user/Jessibooism/videos Bringing the nature in to classrooms. Great start to students’ inquiry. What are the key themes of this clip and its purpose? How would you use in the classroom

21st Century learner Rethinking Learning: The 21st Century Learner | MacArthur Foundation   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0xa98cy-Rw Key ideas about 21st century learner Creating and producing Active learning

What is e-learning ?

What is e-Learning? (defined from NZC) “Learning and teaching that is facilitated by or supported through the smart use of information and communication technologies” smart use?? Strategic. Pedagogically appropriate. Meets needs

What is Blended e-Learning? (defined from TTT) “Blended e-Learning is the smart use of e-Learning tools, resources and teaching/learning strategies with a blend of face to face and virtual approaches with the aim of improving student learning.”

Why e-learning?

Vision of the NZC “Young people who will be confident, connected, actively involved, and lifelong learners.” How do we achieve this? A balanced, culturally responsive curriculum Blended eLearning

Supporting future oriented learning and teaching 6 Key themes Personalising learning New views of equity, diversity and inclusivity A curriculum that uses knowledge to develop learning capacity “Changing the script”: Rethinking learners’ and teachers’ roles A culture of continuous learning for teachers and educational leaders New kinds of partnerships and relationships: schools no longer siloes from the community. Jigsaw activity Our work is underpinned by this research

Principles of effective pedagogy An ethic of care Arranging for learning Building on students’ thinking Worthwhile mathematical tasks Making connections 6. Assessment for learning 7. Mathematical language 8. Mathematical communication 9. Tools and representations 10. Teacher knowledge Where does e-learning fit?

Purpose of digital technologies Engage and motivate students Supplement teaching and learning Active participation Capture their learning – formative assessment Share / communicate their learning with peers, parents and community Feedback / feed forward

Digital learning objects – e-pedagogy Learning objects is designed to produce high-quality interactive multimedia learning objects that support and enhance understanding of key mathematical concepts for students from Year 1 to 10. The learning objects are based on current research findings in mathematics education and pedagogy. They focus on mathematics concepts that are often the most difficult for students to learn and for teachers to teach, and encourage higher order thinking and problem-solving approaches. Explore DLOs, Plan to meet the needs, Students engage with the tasks , Evaluate the learning, Reflect on the e-tool, Identify deliberate acts of teaching and learning before, during and after engaging with DLOs

Digital Learning Objects Explore 2 activities Discuss the following ideas: Big mathematical ideas Effective pedagogy Key themes – supporting future oriented learning Explore 2 activities related to a strand. How can we promote mathematical discourse in our classrooms?

Reflection and Goal Setting In relation to todays session consider the following: Consider one thing you will Start doing. Consider one thing you will Stop doing. Consider one thing you will Keep doing.

e-Learning Planning Framework Self-review tool which helps NZ schools to: measure a school’s level of e-learning capability plan for future development develop sustainability

e-Learning Planning Framework Measures capability against five key dimensions:- Leadership & strategic direction Teaching and learning Professional learning Infrastructure and technologies Beyond the classroom

in four key phases…
