2. Objectives
To outline the purpose of the day and place it in the context of the National Strategies’ plan
To remind subject leaders of the place of APP in the DCSF’s AfL strategy
To discuss the importance of APP within new assessment arrangements for KS3

4. Progression Maps Probing questions
Why is it a good idea to split this shape into rectangles to find the area?
How do you go about calculating the dimensions of the rectangles in the compound shape?
Form a compound shape by pushing together two rectangles. Compare the areas and perimeters of the rectangles with those of the compound shape.
What has changed and why? What happens if you join the rectangles in a different way? Why?

5. Progression Maps What if pupils find this a barrier
Pupils sometimes just add or multiply numbers they see because they do not understand the concepts of perimeter and area.
Give pupils opportunities to explore maximum area and perimeter, using a given, small number of square tiles

7. Funding £150 million over three years to support schools in
developing their use of assessment for learning

2008 – funding for all schools based on £1000 per school plus a sum for each pupil
2009 to 2010 – targeted funding for those schools that need extra help and those who can share good practice
