Bell Ringer 9/8/15 What are the 2 types of locations? Give an example of each.

Essential Questions Identify and locate the seven continents, the four oceans, and the equator on a map What are the 5 Themes of Geography? How can the 5 Themes of Geography help you to understand the world?

Geography Skills

Globe A globe is a round representati on of the Earth. It shows true size, shape, and direction.

Map A map is a flat representation of the world. It is easy to carry and shows detail.

Latitude and Longitude The earth is divided into lots of lines called latitude and longitude.

Lines of Longitude/Meridians Lines of longitude or meridians run north and south and measures the distance east and west of the Prime Meridian.

Prime Meridian The Prime Meridian is 0 degrees longitude and is the starting point for measuring longitude.

Lines of Latitude/Parallels Lines of latitude or parallels run east and west and measure the distance north and south of the equator.

Equator The equator is 0 degrees latitude and is the starting point for measuring latitude.

Hemispheres By using the equator and prime meridian, we can divide the world into four hemispheres, north, south, east, and west.

Global Grid Lines of longitude and latitude cross to form a global grid which is used to locate places on the Earth.

Absolute Location Absolute location is the grid address of a particular place on the Earth.

Compass A compass is a tool that helps the user know what direction one is headed. On a map, a compass or a compass rose helps the user locate these directions.

Source: http://aerocompass.larc.nasa.gov Compass Rose The needle on a compass is magnetized to point to the earth's north magnetic pole. Thus with a compass, a person can roughly tell which direction they are headed. There are four major or cardinal directions on a compass- north, south, east & west. In between are the directions northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest. Source: http://aerocompass.larc.nasa.gov

Cardinal Directions North, east, south, and west are the cardinal directions.

Intermediate Directions The points between the cardinal directions on a compass rose are the intermediate directions (northeast, southeast, northwest, southwest)

Relative Location Relative location describes one place in relation to another. For ex. Pennsylvania is south of New York.

Scale Scale shows the relationship between distances on a map and actual distances on Earth.

Symbol A symbol is anything on a map that stands for something else, for example a * on a map usually indicates a capital.

Map Key or Legend A map key or legend is an area on a map that explains the meaning of the symbols used.

Locators Locators are used on maps to tell individuals where in the world the subject (region) of the map is located.

Political Map Political maps use color to show boundaries.

Physical Map Physical maps show the Earth’s natural features or landforms, for example deserts and mountains.

Writing Activities Write a paragraph describing 3 parts of a map (underline the 3 parts). Tell the function of each part in reading a map.
