From apple to apple juice Grade 4/ schoolyear 2010/11 Teacher: Jutta Knittel

Schooltrip to a farm The appletrees will be shaken.

Collect the apples in boxes!

Leave out the apples with mouldy bits

Shovel the apples in the chopping machine

Fill the press with the chopped apple mixture

Fill the press in the order of „cloth-mixture-cover“

Press it all and the apple-juice runs from the hopper to the bucket After all that the juice is pumped into barrels!

A day later in school Everyone in the desk group has a number and task to create the placemats

Think- Pair- Share Working on their own, everyone comes up with 9 bulletpoints of how to get from an apple to apple juice One partner Other partner

Pair and share Everything will be compared in pairs and written on the middle piece of the worksheet

Pair and share After comparing in pairs, the 2 couples at a desk compare with each other the order of events

Think The children get another worksheet with all the bulletpoints in the wrong order (see addition). Working on their own, they have to find the correct order and glue it in their exercise book After that they can check the order with each other, if it differs they have the option of looking at the teachers worksheet.

The next step is to practise in pairs and memorize the chain of events by heart

As the last step the whole table group takes the last piece of the worksheet and writes down the order of events backwards, starting with the last thing that happened- from the juice. At the end of the lesson the results will be collected on the blackboard and discussed in the class

The same topic can be used in different subjects- for example in arts we drew a book..

..or as pairwork in the german lesson the children wrote short rhymes- „Elfchen“ like they say in german. The rules for Elfchen- Obst Apfel wächst schimmern am Baum sind süß und saftig lecker! Juice sweet, juicy tasty and clear there are different types sour 1 word 2 words 3 words 4 words 1 word For example: Tree the apples they are pressed fruit is being harvested juice

In addition The worksheet „From apple to apple juice“ with the swapped order: Shovel the apples in the chopping machine Fill the press in the order of „cloth-mixture-cover“ Shake the apple trees Leave out apples with mouldy bits Collect the apples in the boxes The apple juice runs from the hopper into the bucket Fill the press with chopped apple mixture Pump the juice into barrels Press it all
