1 Input/ Output Machines
Grade 6 Pattering Unit

2 Recap - Why is a multiplication table useful? - What are some patterns

3 What is an input/ output machine?
Input: a number goes in here Another number comes out here What do you think happens in the middle of the machine?

4 - In the input/ output machine a number will go in from one side, then go through the middle of the machine - As it is in the middle of the machine, it is going through a rule or rules - When the number is finished going through the middle of the machine, a new number comes out of the output

5 What do you think the rule is?
For example... 2 3 6 Input 9 Input Output Output Input Output 2 6 3 9 4 5 What do you think the rule is?

6 What would come next if we know the rule?
Input Output 2 6 3 9 4 5

7 Input Output 2 6 3 9 4 12 5 15

8 Input/ Output when you know the rule
- Sometimes you will know what the rule is before it goes in the machine. For instance, in this machine the rule is: multiply by 5 and add 2 1 ???

9 REMEMBER: The pattern rule is multiply by 5 and add 2
Input Output 1 7 2 3 4

10 Input Output 1 7 2 12 3 17 4 22

11 Task... In pairs, you will draw an input/ output machine with a t-chart below it. -First, select which multiples you will use for your input (i.e. 2s, 7s, 20s etc.) -Second, select a two step pattern rule you will use for the middle of your machine -Third, give your machine to your partner, so they can fill out the output section in the t-chart
